  • Acute malnutrition among children in the Gaza Strip, Palestine

Open Access•Dana Hassneiah, Rana Sobh et al.•ARTICLE•BMJ Global Health•2025

INTRODUCTION: People in the Gaza Strip have been denied food and medical care through war and displacement since October 2023, introducing the risk of famine in the region. We sought to estimate the proportion of children assessed in nutritional centres with moderate acute malnutrition (MAM) and severe acute malnutrition (SAM) in the Gaza Strip during this war. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional analysis of nutritional assessments for childr…

  • Development and implementation of an electronic health record system for use in humanitarian emergencies, disaster response, and conflict zones

    Open Access•Sarah D Draugelis, Erik C Brown et al.•ARTICLE•PLOS Global Public Health•2025

Humanitarian medical response to natural and human-made disasters can be complicated by high clinician, staff, and patient turnover. While electronic medical records are being scaled up globally, their use remains limited in humanitarian response settings. The Fast Electronic Medical Record (fEMR) system is an open-source electronic health record system specifically designed for use in resource-limited settings and humanitarian crises. The system…

We conducted a cross-sectional study of asylum seekers in a federally qualified health center in New York City from January 1 to November 30, 2023, to determine the frequency of and factors associated with hazardous migration events: physical or sexual assault, kidnapping, extortion, illnesses, and incarceration. Result…

    Open Access•Christopher W Reynolds, Savannah F Ryan et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Public Health•2024

Introduction: Shortages of health professionals is a common problem in humanitarian settings, including among migrants and refugees at the US-Mexico border. We aimed to investigate determinants and recruitment recommendations for working with migrants to better understand how to improve health professional participation in humanitarian efforts. Methods: Semi-structured interviews were conducted with health professionals working with migrants at t…

  • Epidemiology of asylum seekers and refugees at the Mexico-US border

Open Access•Christopher W Reynolds, Allison Cheung et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2024

In this large study of a migrating population at the Mexico-US border, we found a variety of clinical conditions, with respiratory, musculoskeletal, and skin illnesses the most common in this study period which encompassed a period of restrictive immigration policy and the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic

  • Health effects and user perceptions of the US Customs and Border Patrol OneTM mobile application

Open Access•Christopher W Reynolds, Brendon Tucker et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Migration and Health•2024•References: 3

Our findings suggest that asylum seekers at the Reynosa port of entry perceive CBP OneTM negatively, with detrimental effects towards their mental and physical health. This study highlights how immigration policy can influence health and suggests that more creative and humane approaches are needed for people seeking asylum at the Mexico-US border

  • Revisiting the role of civil society in responses to infectious disease outbreaks

  • Mobile Health Services for Covid-19

Priya S Gupta, Amir M Mohareb et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•2022•References: 5

Mobile health units can improve access to preventive health services, especially for medically underserved populations. However, there is little published experience of mobile health units being used to expand access to COVID-19 vaccination. In concert with local public health departments and community members, we implemented a mobile COVID-19 health unit and deployed it to 12 predominantly low-income and racial/ethnic minority communities in Mas…

  • Public health impacts of an imminent Red Sea oil spill

    Open Access•Benjamin Q Huynh, Laura H Kwong et al.•ARTICLE•Nature Sustainability•2021•Cited by: 2•References: 2

The possibility of a massive oil spill in the Red Sea is increasingly likely. The Safer , a deteriorating oil tanker containing 1.1 million barrels of oil, has been deserted near the coast of Yemen since 2015 and threatens environmental catastrophe to a country presently in a humanitarian crisis. Here, we model the immediate public health impacts of a simulated spill. We estimate that all of Yemen's imported fuel through its key Red Sea ports wou…
