  • Outbreaks of hepatitis A among illicit drug users, Oklahoma, 1984-87

    John R Harkess, J Harkess et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•1989•Cited by: 12•References: 13

Transmission of hepatitis A has been described in many settings, although few outbreaks have been reported among illicit drug users. We report six unrelated outbreaks of hepatitis A among users of marijuana and intravenously administered methamphetamine. Although the exact mode of transmission could not be determined, practices associated with illicit drug use may have facilitated transmission of hepatitis A. These outbreaks and other recent info…

  • Shigellosis outbreak associated with swimming

Sue Makintubee, J Mallonee et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•1987•Cited by: 3•References: 8

In June 1982, an outbreak of gastrointestinal illness caused by Shigella sonnei occurred among residents of two counties in Oklahoma. A case-control study of cases and age and sex-matched controls showed an association with attendance at a southern Oklahoma lake (14/17 cases vs 3/17 controls, matched pair odds ratio [OR] 9/0, confidence interval [CI] 2.4-infinity). A survey of 85 persons who had visited the lake area showed that persons who had s…

  • Waterborne giardiasis at a mountain resort

    G R Istre, T S Dunlop et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•1984•Cited by: 5•References: 20

In November 1981, an outbreak of waterborne giardiasis occurred at a popular ski resort in Colorado. Stratification of illness by consumption of municipal tap water showed a striking dose-response, with an attack rate of 42 per cent among persons who drank six or more glasses of water per day. Filtered water samples revealed Giardia cysts in specimens both before and after treatment, and several deficiencies were found in the water treatment faci…

  • Endemic Campylobacter jejuni infection in Colorado

    Richard S Hopkins, R Olmsted et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•1984•Cited by: 5•References: 11

A study of persons with laboratory-confirmed sporadic Campylobacter jejuni infection and of controls matched for age and sex in Colorado in the summer of 1981 yielded odds ratio estimates significantly greater than 1 for the following risk factors: drinking raw water (10.74), drinking raw milk (6.93), eating undercooked chicken (2.77), and living in a household with a cat (3.21)

  • Campylobacter enteritis associated with undercooked barbecued chicken

    G R Istre, Martin J Blaser et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•1984•References: 13

An outbreak of Campylobacter enteritis occurred in 1982 among 11 of 15 members and friends of an extended family gathering in Colorado. Median onset for illness, characterized by diarrhea, abdominal cramps, fever and headache, was four days after the party. Illness was associated with eating undercooked chicken. Two ill persons had stool specimens positive for C. jejuni. Eight of ten ill persons tested had Immunoglobulin-M-specific indirect fluor…
