Deprescribing Central Nervous System-Active Medications Among Community-Dwelling Older Adults with Dementia in Primary Care
Central nervous system (CNS)-active medications pose serious health risks for older adults with dementia but are nonetheless commonly used. Few deprescribing interventions have focused on people with dementia. We conducted a one-arm pilot study in six primary care practices of an integrated healthcare system between February and August 2023. The deprescribing intervention consisted of patient/care partner education and self-management materials a…
Primary Care Trainees Learn about Aging in Place via an Academic-Area Agency on Aging Partnership
A community-academic partnership can be leveraged to successfully design, implement, and sustain a curriculum that teaches primary care trainees how to effectively help older adults age in place. Seventy-seven trainees completed the practicum including family medicine residents, advanced practice nursing students, and geriatric medicine fellows. Trainees described feeling empowered to connect their patients to AAA resources. Aging in place can be…
The Association between Gait Speed and Falls in Community Dwelling Older Adults with and without Mild Cognitive Impairment
(1) Background: Falls are common in older adults and result in injuries, loss of independence, and death. Slow gait is associated with falls in older adults, but few studies have assessed the association between gait speed and falls among those with mild cognitive impairment (MCI). (2) Methods: The association between gait speed and falls was assessed in 2705 older adults with and without MCI participating in the Ginkgo Evaluation of Memory Study…
A mixed methods systematic review of informal caregivers' experiences of fall risk among community‐dwelling elders with dementia
Impact of Covid-19 ‘Stay Home, Stay Healthy’ Orders on Function among Older Adults Participating in a Community-Based, Behavioral Intervention Study
Background: Early mitigation orders for COVID-19 halted participation in community-based programs. We examined the early impact of "Stay Home, Stay Healthy" orders on functioning in older adults participating in a behavioral intervention study involving community-based exercise. Methods: A quasi-natural experiment, using mixed methods ( n = 39). Participants completed interviews and questionnaires after 3-4 weeks of the Stay Home, Stay Healthy di…
A Systematic Review of Intervention Studies to Prevent Hospitalizations of Community-dwelling Older Adults With Dementia
Understanding Older Adults’ Motivators and Barriers to Participating in Organized Programs Supporting Exercise Behaviors
Mobility and Aging
Optimal mobility, defined as relative ease and freedom of movement in all of its forms, is central to healthy aging. Mobility is a significant consideration for research, practice, and policy in aging and public health. We examined the public health burdens of mobility disability, with a particular focus on leading public health interventions to enhance walking and driving, and the challenges and opportunities for public health action. We propose…
Older Adults' Views of “Successful Aging”—How Do They Compare with Researchers' Definitions?
Objectives: To determine whether older adults have thought about aging and aging successfully and to compare their perceptions of successful aging with attributes of successful aging identified in the published literature. Design: A cross‐sectional, mailed survey. Setting: King County, Washington. Participants: Nondemented participants from two cohorts. The first cohort, referred to as Kame, which means turtle, a symbol of longevity for Japanese,…
Promoting Health and Preventing Disability in Older Adults
This article describes a partnership between an academic center and community-based organizations for the purpose of improving the health of older adults. Three sequential randomized trials of interventions that have been conducted by this partnership, along with an effectiveness study of one of the interventions, are presented as evidence of the partnership's success. Characteristics of an effective partnership are highlighted; these include: (1…
