Effectiveness of prescribed burn health risk communication on community and individual smoke-protective decision making using protective action theories
Background: Prescribed burns are a land management tool with several cultural and ecological benefits. However, they can produce enough smoke to result in adverse health effects increasing the importance of prescribed burn health risk communication. This study evaluated a prescribed burn health risk communication toolkit that is in development. Methods: Focus groups were conducted with community and institutional stakeholders. The protection moti…
Examining pathways between structural stigma and tobacco use: A comparison among young adults living in the United States by sexual orientation and gender identity
Future tobacco intervention research should consider the role of structural stigma when working with SGM YA; specifically, how interventions promoting economic stability may influence tobacco use and cessation in this population
Critical Interventions, Real Conversations: Discursive Design for Culturally Tailored Smoking Cessation
This exploratory study examines how discursive design—using provocative, speculative artifacts to spark reflection and discussion—might expand public health experts’ problematization of approaches to tailoring and targeting interventions. Cultural tailoring and targeting (CTT) refers to adapting interventions for specific sociocultural populations. Because LGBTQ+ communities experience disproportionately high rates of tobacco use, this study appl…
Measurement Matters for Transgender Veterans’ Visibility in the Electronic Health Record
Authentic’ or ‘corny’: LGBTQ+ young adults respond to visual, thematic and semantic elements of culturally targeted tobacco public education advertisements
Tobacco public education ads featuring 'every-day' LGBTQ+people in candid or unposed shots, personal stories with gain-framed messaging, and subtle Pride iconography and colours may increase acceptability among LGBTQ+YA. Researchers should focus on cultivating authenticity in ads and avoid outdated trends by consulting with the community and moving with speed from development to implementation
How Age and E-cigarette Use Status Interact to Influence E-cigarette Ad Perceptions
Background: The prevalence of e-cigarette use among young people remains high. Young people are susceptible to e-cigarette advertising, although potential heterogeneity in perceptions of e-cigarette ads with respect to age and e-cigarette use history remains unexplored. We aimed to assess differences in perceptions of e-cigarette ads and product use intention, by age and e-cigarette use status. Methods: Participants from an online convenience sam…
E-Cigarette Use among Sexual Minoritized Women and Nonbinary People Assigned Female at Birth: Assessing the Roles of Discrimination, Perceived Stress, and Social Support
Background: Young adult sexual minoritized women (SMW) are at disproportionate risk for e-cigarette use, which may in part be due to excess minority stress imposed by discrimination exposure. While discrimination exposure is associated with risk for combustible tobacco/nicotine use among SMW, similar associations have yet to be tested with e-cigarettes. Moreover, it is unknown if discrimination-related risk may be mitigated by protective factors …
The Effects of Oral Nicotine Pouch Packaging Features on Adult Tobacco Users’ and Non-Users’ Product Perceptions
The study findings demonstrate that the nicotine concentration displayed on ONP packaging can affect adults' perceptions of ONPs. Further research on the effects of ONP packaging features emphasizing nicotine (e.g., "tobacco free" nicotine claims) on tobacco users and non-users is needed to assess their potential public health impact
Juul and its ‘Action Network’ attempt to prevent a local flavour ban
Sexual orientation disparities in food insecurity and food assistance use in U.S. adult women: National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, 2005–2014
All SMW reported higher prevalence of food insecurity than exclusively heterosexual women. Lesbians and heterosexual WSW were also more likely to rely on emergency food assistance. This is problematic as SNAP use may reduce food insecurity over time, but emergency food resources (e.g., food pantries) do not. More evidence is needed to understand the multilevel factors driving food insecurity in this population to develop policy and community-base…
Disparities in food insecurity at the intersection of race and sexual orientation: A population-based study of adult women in the United States
Food insecurity affects 1 in 8 American adults annually, and is more prevalent in Black and sexual minority women. We applied an intersectional approach to investigate food insecurity prevalence in women with intersecting minority race and sexual orientation. We used two United States surveillance systems-National Health Interview Survey (NHIS) 2013-2018 and National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2005-2014, to estimate how race…
Switching stories: User testimonials on juul.com continue to contradict Juul’s switch ≠ cessation narrative
This study presents a foundation for understanding how adult users describe JUUL, including their experiences using JUUL to 'switch' or stop smoking. Currently, the effectiveness of ENDS for smoking cessation is not supported by substantial evidence; however, if cessation is defined as 'quitting combustible tobacco products', then regulators should be aware that switch and cessation messages may not be distinct
What Is Successful Aging in Lesbian and Bisexual Women? Application of the Aging-Well Model
Aging-well is not the same for all women. Health promotion programs may consider maximizing sexual minority women's internal and external resources-including social supports, self-mastery, and personal growth-to promote wellness in older age
Incorporating practical application in graduate introductory public health courses
Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to examine the utility of a redesigned course assessment in a required, introductory Master of Public Health (MPH) course to demonstrate competency achievement through practical application. School of public health curricula are informed by competency-based education (CBE) to prepare students for the field. This is a challenge in introductory courses as traditional assessments do not translate into practical…
