Patterns of goal attainment among young mothers in a home visiting program
This paper examined heterogeneity in parents’ patterns of goal attainment following home visiting. Young mothers (n = 696) participating in a randomized controlled trial (RCT) evaluation of a statewide home visiting program were classified, using latent class analysis (LCA), according to their pattern of goal attainment (i.e., educational attainment, employment, parenting, personal functioning) two years postpartum. We explored direct and indirec…
Rapid Repeat Birth
This study examined interpretations of motherhood among adolescents who have experienced rapid repeat births (second births within 24 months of the primiparous birth). Analyses of participants’ descriptions of their transitions to motherhood indicate four modal narratives that vary along two axes: the adoption of a motherhood identity, and the nature (or stability) of relational support available. By using subjective perceptions of motivation, st…

Improving Adolescent Parenting
Objectives. Our aim was to estimate the effects of Healthy Families Massachusetts, a statewide home visiting program serving first-time adolescent parents, on parenting, child development, educational attainment, family planning, and maternal health and well-being. Methods. We used a randomized controlled trial design to randomly assign the 704 participants to a group receiving home visiting services or a control group. Between 2008 and 2012, tel…
Poor But Not Powerless
The present study demonstrates the processes by which 12 young women working in four production chain factories in China shape their own lives — their developmental trajectories — during the period following their entry into factory work. One-on-one, in-depth, semi-structured interviews were conducted in August, 2005, as part of an evaluation project that assessed the labor practices and interpersonal relationships in production chain factories. …
Cultural relevance as program‐to‐community alignment
Calls for cultural sensitivity in the design and implementation of human services programs have become a standard response to the increasing diversity among the families and communities being served. In this article, we take a critical look at the construct, using data from a multi‐year evaluation of a statewide family support program. We examine how selected, locally implemented programs operationalize the state program's cultural sensitivity st…

Child and Family Program Evaluation
The demand for program evaluation has grown so dramatically over the past 20 years that virtually all programs-big and small, well-funded and grassroots, new and veteran-are now expected to undertake it. The current popularity of "outcomes-based accountability" provides a backdrop for this "cautionary tale" about the uses and misuses of evaluation, and the necessity to match evaluations more precisely to the characteristics of the programs themse…

Defining a Social Problem
Supporting Family Life
Survey data from a national sample of homeless family shelters (N = 59) were analyzed to describe the family support programming available to residents. Data were reporled on facility and resident characteristics and family support programming, as well as on facility admission criteria and program participation requirements. Four independent valiables (length of stay, shelter capacity, sponsorship, and program philosophy) were examined for their …
Evaluating Family Programs
Chronically Ill children in school
Attention to the specific educational needs of chronically ill children is a relatively recent development in American education, beginning in a limited fashion at the turn of the century. Prior to that time, high mortality rates, societal attitudes towards the chronically ill or delicate child, and the view of public schooling as a privilege rather than a right, kept all but the mildly impaired out of the public system. Reversals in these trends…
Parental smoking and the risk of childhood asthma
Data from two random population surveys are used to assess the relationship between parental smoking and the prevalence of asthma in children aged 0-17. Data from a 1977 Midwestern urbanized county indicate that, if mothers smoked, the prevalence of parent reported asthma increased from 5.0 per cent to 7.7 per cent (estimated relative risk of 1.5), and the prevalence of functionally impairing asthma increased from 1.1 per cent to 2.2 per cent (re…
