  • Lessons from the Dutch Abortion Experience

    H P David, Jany Rademakers•ARTICLE•Studies in Family Planning•1996•Cited by: 4

Not only does the Netherlands have the lowest induced abortion rate in the world, but Dutch youth have the lowest rates of both adolescent pregnancy and abortion. This record is attributed to a general stance of openness and acceptance of sexuality as a healthy part of life that emerged in 1965-75 in response to recognition of the public health impact of unwanted pregnancy. Modern contraceptives (excluding condoms) are provided at no charge by th…

  • Abortion and Women's Rights in Poland, 1994

    H P David, Anna Titkow•ARTICLE•Studies in Family Planning•1994•Cited by: 1

In 1993, a restrictive abortion law was enacted in Poland. The law allows abortion in public hospitals when 3 physicians certify that the life or health of the woman is at stake, the fetus has a serious and irreversible malformation (supported by prenatal tests in cases of known history of genetic conditions), or a public prosecutor formally proves that a criminal act (i.e., rape or incest) caused the pregnancy. Physicians who perform illegal abo…

  • Illegal abortion in Mexico

S P de Weiss, Shari Weiss et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•1990•Cited by: 1•References: 2

An exploratory study of the perceptions of 156 abortion clients in Mexico suggests that perceived quality of service was the main reason for choosing physicians while cost and anonymity were the major reasons for choosing nonphysicians. "Too young" was the most often cited reason for pregnancy termination, followed by economic situation and having too many children already. Cost was, on average, equivalent to three to four weeks minimum wage; phy…

  • Family planning services for persons handicapped by mental retardation

    H P David, J D Smith et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•1976•Cited by: 2

The National Children's Center, Inc., and Planned Parenthood of Metropolitan Washington joined in organizing a special family planning service for persons handicapped with mental retardation. The limited utilization, despite considerable community recruitment efforts, and the few problems encountered with patients served suggest that handicapped individuals can be seen at lower cost and at greater efficiency in regularly scheduled clinics, provid…
