  • Long-Acting Injectable Prep for People Who Inject Drugs at a Syringe Services Program

Open Access•Edward Suarez, Hansel Tookes et al.•ARTICLE•AIDS and Behavior•2025

Although people who inject drugs (PWID) are at high risk of acquiring HIV, knowledge and uptake of pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) for HIV prevention among this population remain low due to numerous psychosocial and structural barriers. Multiple implementation strategies have been proposed to address this gap, notably providing long-acting injectable (LAI) formulations of PrEP and offering PrEP at syringe services programs (SSPs). This qualitativ…

  • Injection and Sexual Behavior Profiles among People Who Inject Drugs in Miami, Florida

    Open Access•Teresa A Chueng, Hansel Tookes et al.•ARTICLE•Substance Use & Misuse•2022

BACKGROUND: The dynamics of injection drug use and higher-risk sexual practices compound the risk of HIV and HCV acquisition. Published literature on people who inject drugs (PWID) has examined risk of infection assuming homogeneity of cohort behavior. Categorizing subgroups by injection and sexual risk can inform a more equitable approach to how syringe services programs (SSPs) adapt harm reduction resources and implementation of evidence-based …

  • From declining PrEP to PrEP initiation as “first nature” – what changes PrEP initiation decisions among young, Black MSM

Wenting Huang, Annie Lockard et al.•ARTICLE•AIDS Care•2022

Young Black men who have sex with men (YBMSM) bear a disproportionate burden of HIV, and HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) uptake has been slow. Decisions regarding PrEP initiation change in different life contexts over time. Our YBMSM cohort study found about 1/3 of those who initially declined PrEP subsequently changed and initiated PrEP care. This study explores the process of their PrEP decision changes. The study interviewed participants w…

  • Predictors of pain-related functional impairment among people living with HIV on long-term opioid therapy

David P Serota, Christine Capozzi et al.•ARTICLE•AIDS Care•2021

People living with HIV (PLWH) have high levels of functional impairment due to pain, also called pain interference. Long-term opioid therapy (LTOT) is commonly prescribed for chronic pain among PLWH. We sought to better understand the predictors of pain interference, measured with the Brief Pain Inventory Interference subscale (BPI-I), among PLWH with chronic pain on LTOT. Using a prospective cohort of PLWH on LTOT we developed a model to identif…

  • Disparities in risk perception and low harm reduction services awareness, access, and utilization among young people with newly reported hepatitis C infections in California, 2018

Open Access•Alison Ohringer, Alison R Ohringer et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2021

Among young people with HCV, we found limited pre-diagnosis HCV risk perception and access to harm reduction services, with racial/ethnic disparities. Interventions to increase harm reduction services awareness, access, and utilization among young PWID, especially young PWID of color, may be warranted

  • Impact of routine opt-out HIV/HCV screening on testing uptake at a syringe services program

    Open Access•Tyler S Bartholomew, Hansel E Tookes et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of Drug…•2020

Bundled opt-out HIV/HCV testing substantially increased the percentage of SSP clients who received HIV and HCV rapid tests at enrollment into the program, and the effect remained stable across the 22 months post opt-out testing policy. Future investigation must assess PWID-level perspective of testing preferences and examine whether this testing approach improves HIV/HCV detection among PWID previously unaware of their status
