  • Aspiring to a Normal Life

    Ulrike Schultz•ARTICLE•Transfers•2024

Sudan since its independence in 1956 and South Sudan since its secession from Sudan in 2011 have been exposed to political and economic crises, civil wars, and local and regional outbreaks of violence that have forced people to leave their homes and move on to more secure places. Reflecting on the lives of two women, I scrutinize how people try to live normal lives despite the chronicity of crisis and a high degree of (forced) mobility. For them,…

    Open Access•Ulrike Schultz•ARTICLE•PERIPHERIE – Politik • Ökonomie •…•2024

  • Combining the Legal and the Social in Sociology of Law

Open Access•Peter Scharff Smith, Håkan Hydén et al.•EDITOR•BOOK•Combining the Legal and the…•2023

This open access book pays homage to Reza Banakar, who passed away in August 2020, exploring the many different areas of socio-legal research that he worked on and influenced. It begins with a summary of his career and explains how he sparked a debate on the identity and aims of legal sociology. The book is then split into five sections which look at theory, methods and interdisciplinarity, legal culture, law and sociology of law, and applied soc…

  • Don't Call Me a Foreigner

    Ulrike Schultz•ARTICLE•Diaspora A Journal of Transnational…•2022•References: 12

This article is based on long-term research with South Sudanese who lived in Khartoum before the secession of South Sudan from Sudan and who moved to Juba between 2006 and 2013. Taking the case of South Sudanese belonging to the Bari, an ethnic group originally from the area around Juba, I argue that politics of return forces people to identify with specific forms of belonging and relate this belonging to specific places. Furthermore, people have…

  • Gender in Socio-Legal Teaching and Research in Germany

    Open Access•Ulrike Schultz•ARTICLE•German Law Journal•2020

Gender in socio-legal teaching and research in Germany is a story of impediments, hindrances, and of singleperson initiatives—my personal history being a part of this. But it is also a story of influences upon the impulse and inspiration to undertake socio-legal work. My Article is therefore influenced by (feminist) standpoint theory (Harding 1991). Germany has had a very conservative family culture and, over the past decades, many of the legal r…

  • Judiciary and Gender Topics. German Experience and International Perspectives

    Open Access•Ulrike Schultz•ARTICLE•e-cadernos CES•2015•References: 1

In Germany the first female judge was admitted in 1926 but it took decades for women judges to gain a substantial share of positions in the judiciary. In the 1970s, still only about 6% of judges were women. Their numbers only started to increase in the late 1980s, proportionally to the risen participation of women in law studies. For the past ten years more women than men have studied law (55% in 2014), the number of women judges has risen to 46%…

  • ‘There it will be better … ’

    Ulrike Schultz•ARTICLE•Identities•2013

At the time of the research, Khartoum was a multi-ethnic and multinational metropolis of 8 million people. A considerable part of the population consists of Southern Sudanese migrants and displaced persons that came during the 20 years plus of civil war in South Sudan to the capital. These people were categorised after the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA), as displaced people regardless as to whether they come to the capital as labour migrants…
