  • Increasing biodiversity and ecosystem functions along an age gradient of urban greenspaces

Open Access•Yerang Yang, Manuel Delgado‐Baquerizo et al.•ARTICLE•Landscape and Urban Planning•2026

Urban greenspace soils show substantial ecological development over time, despite persistent urban constraints. • Soil organic matter is a key indicator of development and encourages diverse, complex microbial communities. • Shifts in microbial communities enhance potential metabolic activity and traits, aligning with natural ecosystems. • Management should prioritize long-term ecological health and soil organic matter over short-term aesthetics.…

  • Computerized Machine Tools and the Transformation of U.S. Manufacturing

Leah Boustan, Leah Platt Boustan et al.•ARTICLE•The Review of Economics and…•2025

The diffusion of computerized machine tools in the mid-20th century was a pivotal step in the century-long process of factory automation. We build a novel measure of exposure to computer numerical control (CNC) using initial variation in tool types across industries and differential shifts toward CNC by type. Industries more exposed to CNC from 1970–2007 increased labor productivity and reduced production employment. Workers in more exposed labor…

  • Job Tenure and Gendered Perception of Workplace Challenges in Gendered Organizations

Open Access•Jisu Park, Damaske et al.•ARTICLE•Socius Sociological Research for…•2025•References: 26

The authors examine the gendered perceptions of workplace challenges in the male-dominated fields of computer science, engineering, and mathematics (CSEM). Using novel qualitative and quantitative data from an online survey of 3,556 cisgender CSEM professionals, the authors explore how women and men differently perceive workplace challenges in domains that are central to gendered organizational theory. In stark contrast to prior research that sug…

  • The Growth Machine as an Agent of Racial Capitalism

    Open Access•Zawadi Rucks‐ahidiana, JiWon Choi et al.•ARTICLE•City and Community•2025•References: 23

The growth machine theory uses a political economy approach to explain why city politics center development interests. We argue that the growth machine operates not only to profit from capitalism, but from White supremacy. To capture this dimension of power and oppression, we theorize the growth machine as an agent of racial capitalism and illustrate it through a study of news media’s assessments of gentrification in two cities. Our findings demo…

  • A Study on the Effect of Neo-liberal Appearance Notions on Korean Women’s Appearance Surveillance

    In-Sook Lim, Ji-Won Choi et al.•ARTICLE•Korean Journal of Sociology•2022

  • Spousal influence on physical activity in physically inactive pregnant women

Ji Won Choi, JiWon Choi et al.•ARTICLE•Health Care For Women International•2017

Regular physical activity (PA) is recommended during pregnancy, but the prevalence of pregnant women who met the recommended level for PA is very low. In this descriptive study, we examined the association between spousal characteristics (belief, knowledge, social support, and PA level) and pregnant women's PA level in 18 couples living in the San Francisco Bay Area. Among other spousal characteristics, only spousal PA level was a significant pre…

  • Physical Activity, Weight, and Waist Circumference in Midlife Women

Ji Won Choi, JiWon Choi et al.•ARTICLE•Health Care For Women International•2012

During midlife years, women are at risk of increasing body weight and waist circumference. We evaluated changes in weight and waist circumference from enrollment to 2 years later and examined the influence of physical activity level on those changes among 232 women aged between 40 and 50. Weight increased significantly for the entire sample. Those who increased their physical activity from enrollment to 2 years later had the smallest increase in …

Ji Won Choi, JiWon Choi et al.•ARTICLE•Health Care For Women International•2011

Our purpose in this study was to examine the patterns of physical activity and demographic characteristics associated with those patterns in Korean immigrants in the United States. Participants were 197 women, and the International Physical Activity Questionnaire was utilized. The inactive pattern was the most frequent pattern in all domains of physical activity except household physical activity. There were differences among the patterns of phys…

A sample of 236 African, European, and Mexican/Central Americans aged 40-50 completed the initial, 1-year, and 2-year assessments. The effects of demographic characteristics and physical activity on BMI at the 2-year assessment were evaluated using hierarchical multiple regression analysis. After controlling for ot…
