A comparison of classifications for geographic location and their associations with tobacco use among US adults
PURPOSE: This study compared two classifications of rurality and their associations with cigarette, e-cigarette, and smokeless tobacco (SLT) use among a nationally representative sample of 31,196 US adults. METHODS: Data from Wave 1 of the Population Assessment of Tobacco and Health Study. Weighted descriptive statistics and multivariable logistic regressions assessed whether two classifications of rurality were differentially associated with pas…
Electronic Cigarette Device and Liquid Characteristics: Comparison of Self-Reports to User-Provided Pictures
INTRODUCTION: Self-reports of electronic cigarette (ECIG) device and liquid characteristics are not always accurate or consistent with characteristics as measured by researchers. Two methods for measuring ECIG characteristics were compared: user self-reports and rater-coded pictures. METHODS: = 321) reported on device (disposable, refillable, adjustable power, brand) and liquid (nicotine concentration, formulation, flavor) characteristics. To mea…
Validation of the Electronic Cigarette Expectancy Scale for Adolescents
Introduction Expectancies of costs and benefits can be predictive of tobacco use, as well as cessation attempts and success. Measuring electronic cigarette (ECIG) expectancies is in its infancy, particularly among adolescents. However, the popularity of adolescent ECIG use demonstrates the need to understand better these contributing factors. Our aim was to evaluate the factor structure and initial psychometric properties of an ECIG expectancies …
Geographic isolation predicts tobacco product use among youth: A latent class analysis
PURPOSE: The purpose of the current study was to evaluate associations between geographic rurality and tobacco use patterns among adolescents. METHODS: High school students (N = 566) from north-central Appalachia reported on their lifetime and/or current use of cigarettes, electronic cigarettes (ECIGs), cigars, and smokeless tobacco. Geographic rurality was measured via the Isolation scale, whereby residential ZIP Codes determined the degree to w…
Balancing Risks and Benefits of E-Cigarettes in the Real World
Cigarette smokers’ concurrent use of smokeless tobacco: Dual use patterns and nicotine exposure
Results support the idea of product supplementation rather than replacement among this convenience sample of dual users. For smokers whose primary motivation for SLT use involves situations where they would otherwise be tobacco free, the potential benefits of clean indoor air laws may be diminished
What factors reliably predict electronic cigarette nicotine delivery
Puff duration and liquid nicotine concentration may be among the more important factors to consider as regulators attempt to balance e-cigarette safety with efficacy. These findings should be interpreted in the context of devices with relatively low power output, a variable not studied here but likely also directly relevant to product regulation
Physical Activity and Quit Motivation Moderators of Adolescent Smoking Reduction
Adolescents may benefit from interventions designed to address the barriers faced during a quit attempt, including their motivation to make a change and their engagement in other healthy behaviors such as physical activity
A Multiple Indicators and Multiple Causes Model of Alternative Tobacco Use
Prevention and cessation programs might reduce adolescent ATP use by targeting specific characteristics of cigarette smoking
Indoor air quality in Virginia waterpipe cafés
The PM2.5 concentrations observed among the waterpipe cafés sampled here indicated air quality in the waterpipe café smoking rooms was worse than restaurant rooms in which cigarette smoking was permitted, and state-required non-smoking rooms in waterpipe cafés may expose patrons and employees to PM2.5 concentrations above national and international air quality standards. Reducing the health risks of secondhand smoke may require smoke-free establi…
Availability and Characteristics of Betel Products in the U.S
Betel use involves oral placement of shards of areca nut (Areca catechu palm seed containing the cholinergic agonist arecoline) wrapped with slaked lime in a betel leaf (Piper betle plant) or various chopped or powdered products containing areca nut and/or parts of the betel plant. Additives to this mixture include catechu (areca palm extract), spices/ sweeteners (e.g., saccharin, cloves), and/or tobacco. Betel use is most common in Asia and East…
Caffeine's Influence on Nicotine's Effects in Nonsmokers
Objective-To determine if nicotine's effects are influenced by caffeine in nonsmoking, moderate-caffeine consuming individuals (N=20).Methods-The first 3 sessions included one of 3 randomly ordered, double-blind caffeine doses (0, 75, or 150 mg, oral [po]) and 2 single-blind nicotine gum doses (2 and 4 mg) in ascending order. The fourth session (single blind) repeated the 0 mg caffeine condition.Results-Nicotine increased heart rate and subjective…
