Psychedelic Terminology Preference in the 2024 National Survey Investigating Hallucinogenic Trends (NSIHT)
Expanding regulation and increased use of psychedelic substances requires surveillance of behaviors and health outcomes in the United States. Widely comprehendible terminology is important for surveys. The objective of this study was to determine what psychedelic terminology is preferred among adults who used a psychedelic in the past 12 months. A cross-sectional survey measuring psychedelic use behaviors was administered. A rank-order question w…
Gabapentin-Related State Policies and Associations with Gabapentin Non-Medical Use Among a Nationally Representative Population in the United States
AIMS: Gabapentin is not a federally controlled substance, yet multiple states have implemented gabapentin-specific policies in response to non-medical use (NMU). This study aims to compare prevalence of gabapentin NMU by state policy type and examine the association between gabapentin NMU and gabapentin-related state policy types. METHODS: Data come from the Survey of Non-Medical Use of Prescription Drugs, which employed an online cross-sectional…
Proactive Bias Mitigation When Using Online Survey Panels for Self-Reported Use of Illicitly Manufactured Fentanyl in the General Adult Population
Results of this survey study suggest that fentanyl use has shifted toward oral use, which may contribute to observed lower mortality rates despite an increase in prevalence of use. Methods intended to reduce systematic bias have a strong influence on low prevalence behavior estimates and should be implemented for all survey-based drug use surveillance
Comparing Substance Use Consequences between Serotonergic Psychedelics, MDMA, and other Drugs of Abuse Among United States Adults with History of Psychiatric Illness
Psychedelic-assisted therapy could transform treating psychiatric illness, but harms from exacerbating substance use disorder (SUD) among adults with psychiatric illness using psychedelics have not been studied. A cross-sectional survey in the US was used to test whether Drug Abuse Screening Test scores (DAST-10, validated instrument predicting SUD) were more severe when psychiatric illnesses (anxiety disorder, major depressive disorder [MDD], po…
Associations Between Kratom-Related State Policy Environments and Kratom Use in a Nationally Representative Population in the United States
Limited research has resulted in conflicting views on the risks versus benefits associated with kratom use. Despite no federal policy in the United States, individual states have implemented diverging policies through kratom bans, and legalization and regulation through Kratom Consumer Protection Acts (KCPAs). The Survey of Non-Medical Use of Prescription Drugs (NMURx) Program employs nationally-representative, repeated cross-sectional surveys on…
