Adolescents’ perception of the relationship between movement skills, physical activity and sport
Movement skill competence is important to organised youth physical activity participation, but it is unclear how adolescents view this relationship. The primary aim of this study was to explore adolescents’ perception of the relationship between movement skills, physical activity and sport, and whether their perceptions differed according to extent of participation in organised physical activities. We recruited 33 (17 male) Grade 11 and 12 studen…
Childhood Motor Skill Proficiency as a Predictor of Adolescent Physical Activity
Perceived sports competence mediates the relationship between childhood motor skill proficiency and adolescent physical activity and fitness
BACKGROUND: The purpose of this paper was to investigate whether perceived sports competence mediates the relationship between childhood motor skill proficiency and subsequent adolescent physical activity and fitness. METHODS: In 2000, children's motor skill proficiency was assessed as part of a school-based physical activity intervention. In 2006/07, participants were followed up as part of the Physical Activity and Skills Study and completed as…
Older Persons’ Perception of Risk of Falling
Objectives. We examined older people’s attitudes about falls and implications for the design of fall-prevention awareness campaigns. Methods. We assessed data from (1) computer-assisted telephone surveys conducted in 2002 with Australians 60 years and older in Northern Rivers, New South Wales (site of a previous fall-prevention program; n=1601), and Wide Bay, Queensland (comparison community; n=1601), and (2) 8 focus groups (n=73). Results. Parti…
Meeting the challenge of falls prevention at the population level
Older people form a large and growing segment of our population, experience disproportionately more illness and require more use of health services than any other group. This differential is largely due to falls, which are the leading cause of injury for those aged 65 plus. The North Coast ‘Stay On Your Feet’ programme is a 4-year multi-strategic, community-based intervention to address this problem among 80000 older residents. This paper present…

Transferring community-based interventions to new settings
Health promoters wishing to successfully replicate community-based heart health interventions from major research and demonstration programs, face numerous obstacles in the adoption process. Unfortunately, there is little specific literature to guide them through the process. A case study is presented to demonstrate that by closely examining differences between the resources and user settings in terms of geography, socio-demography, policy, organ…
