  • Memory and Transitional Justice in the Croatian Lika Region

    Open Access•Heike Karge•ARTICLE•Europe Asia Studies•2026

This essay analyses memory politics in Lika, a Croatian borderland marked by two historical ruptures: the Ustaša genocide of 1941 and the war crimes and Serb exodus of the 1990s. Drawing on fieldwork, demographic data and official documents, this essay examines the competition amongst these pasts at the Gospić, Jadovno and Slana sites, identifies three mechanisms of silencing (deterrence, structural forgetting and substitution), and shows that ab…

  • The Schizophrenic Face of War

    Heike Karge•ARTICLE•Balkanistic Forum•2025

My contribution deals with the question of how the First World War affected the mental health of Croatian, Bosnian, and Serbian soldiers who served in the Austro-Hungarian armies and who were sent during or shortly after the war to the Hospital for the Insane in Stenjevec (close to Zagreb, Croatia-Slavonia). In that time, military men who were admitted to Stenjevec were predominantly given diagnoses such as dementia praecox, catatonia, or amentia…

  • Sajmiste, Jasenovac, and the social frames of remembering and forgetting

    Open Access•Heike Karge•ARTICLE•Filozofija i drustvo•2012•References: 1

The article discusses the reasons for the construction, in the 1960s, of memorial to the victims of the former camp in Jasenovac in Yugoslavia, although no such memorial was built at the Sajmiste site. How should we explain and understand this difference and what do these two sites stand for in Yugoslav discourses about the past? I will argue that the memorial project for Jasenovac was, due to certain developments, seen as a substitute for simila…

  • Mediated remembrance

    Heike Karge•ARTICLE•European Review of History Revue…•2009•Cited by: 2•References: 2

This article explores practices of collective war remembrance in the socialist Yugoslavia. Memory of the Second World War in Yugoslavia has often been described as ‘frozen’, and this is seen as having led to the eruption of formerly suppressed memories at the end of the 1980s. To challenge this assumption, the author studies the negotiation of practices of collective war remembrance in Yugoslavia, and highlights the dynamic character of war remem…
