Prevalence, Incidence, and Risk of Different Comorbidity Categories in Pediatric Multiple Sclerosis
A systematic quantification of comorbidity prevalence, incidence (where available), and risk, together with POMS-specific characteristics and any reported impact on clinical outcomes, is anticipated to provide a crucial evidence base for guiding screening, refining management strategies, and informing future research directions. Ultimately, these findings may improve clinical outcomes and quality of life for children and adolescents with MS
Effects of a Brief Web-Based “Social Norms”-Intervention on Alcohol, Tobacco and Cannabis Use Among German University Students
Background and Aim: “Social norms” (SN)-interventions are aimed at changing existing misperceptions regarding peer substance use by providing feedback on actual norms, thereby affecting personal substance use. It is unknown whether SN-intervention effects previously demonstrated in US students can be replicated in German students. The aim of the INSIST-study was to examine the effects of a web-based SN-intervention on substance use. Design: Clust…
Safety Performance of Healthcare Professionals
Improving patient safety and reducing occupational accidents are two of the main challenges in healthcare. Instruments to measure safety performance and occupational safety are rare. This study aimed to prepare and validate a German version of the adapted workplace health and safety instrument to assess the safety performance of healthcare professionals. Overall, 168 healthcare professionals participated in this explorative cross-sectional study.…
Thoughts about health and patient-reported outcomes among people with diabetes mellitus
Thoughts about health are a part of everyday life for a substantial number of people with diabetes. Surprisingly, even positive thoughts are associated with poorer HRQoL in our study. Further research within the DRM paradigm is needed to understand how thoughts about health may affect people's (assessment of) state of health. Thoughts about health should be considered in diabetes education and patient counselling with a view to preventing and tre…
Good Practice Data Linkage (GPD)
The data linkage of different data sources for research purposes is being increasingly used in recent years. However, generally accepted methodological guidance is missing. The aim of this article is to provide methodological guidelines and recommendations for research projects that have been consented to across different German research societies. Another aim is to endow readers with a checklist for the critical appraisal of research proposals a…
Different information needs in subgroups of people with diabetes mellitus
Knowledge about different patient subgroups can be useful for tailored information campaigns or physician-patient interactions. Further research is needed to analyse health care needs in these groups, changes in information needs over the course of the disease, and prospective health outcomes
Regional differences in the incidence of self-reported type 2 diabetes in Germany
BACKGROUND: Population-based data are paramount to investigate the long-term course of diabetes, for planning in healthcare and to evaluate the cost-effectiveness of primary prevention. We analysed regional differences in the incidence of self-reported type 2 diabetes mellitus in Germany. METHODS: Data of participants (baseline age 45-74 years) from five regional population-based studies conducted between 1997 and 2010 were included (mean follow-…
P2-269 Regional differences in the prevalence of type 2 diabetes mellitus
Introduction In Germany, regional data on the prevalence of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) are lacking for use in healthcare planning. We analysed regional differences in the prevalence of T2DM and treatment with antidiabetic agents. Methods Data from five regional population-based studies and the German National Health Interview and Examination Survey (GNHIES98) conducted between 1997 and 2006 were analysed. Estimates of self-reported diabetes,…
Within-trial economic evaluation of diabetes-specific cognitive behaviour therapy in patients with type 2 diabetes and subthreshold depression
The trial has been registered at the Clinical Trials Register (NCT01009138)
Comparison of hip fracture incidence and trends between Germany and Austria 1995-2004
In this study comparing hip fracture incidences and its trend using pooled data, the incidence in Austria was 30% higher compared to its neighbouring country Germany. For both countries a similar increasing trend of hip fracture incidence over the 10-year study period was calculated. The results need confirmation by other studies
Blood glucose testing and primary prevention of diabetes mellitus type 2 - evaluation of the effect of evidence based patient information
Current Controlled Trial: ISRCTN22060616
Hip fractures and area level socioeconomic conditions
Our results showed weak associations between indicators of socioeconomic conditions at area level and hip fracture risk; the varied by type of indicator. We conclude that hip fracture incidence might be influenced by the socioeconomic context of a region, but further analysis using more specific markers for deprivation on a smaller scale and individual-level data are needed
Remarkable Decline in Hip Fracture Incidence in Younger Age Groups in Germany
Hip fractures have a large economic impact because of the requirement of hospital and follow-up care, in addition to causing substantial health deterioration.1 Numerous studies have presented trends of hip fracture incidence, focusing on people aged 45 or 50 years and older.2,3 Data on younger age groups has not been discussed yet. Analyses of trends for injury-related hospitalization do not separately report hip fractures3–5 as do analyses of ot…
Trends in Hospitalization and Sociodemographic Factors in Diabetic and Nondiabetic Populations in Germany
Objectives. We examined time trends of hospitalization, a main outcome measure in health care, in the diabetic and nondiabetic populations in Germany and their associations with sociodemographic variables. Methods. Using data from 2 national health surveys, we estimated hospital days per person-year in the diabetic and nondiabetic populations in 1998 (n=5422) and 1990–1992 (n=7363) in Germany. We used Poisson regression to estimate relative risks…
