Associations between dental caries and ponderal growth in children
Background: The evidence around the relationship between Early Childhood Caries (ECC) and undernutrition is sparse and mostly reported from cross-sectional data sets. This paper aimed to test the relationship between ECC and linear and ponderal growth trajectories. Methods: This project involves secondary data analysis from the Cambodia Longitudinal Health and Nutrition Study. The analytical sample included a 2y-cohort of 894 children who were yo…
Association between satellite-detected tropospheric nitrogen dioxide and acute respiratory infections in children under age five in Senegal
This study highlights the need for increased research on the effects of ambient NO 2 exposure in Africa as well as the need for more robust, ground-based air monitoring in the region. For a country like Senegal, where more than 90% of the population lives in areas that do not meet the national air quality standards, it is urgently required to implement air pollution prevention efforts to protect children from the health hazards of air pollution
Key Informants’ Perspectives on Childhood Obesity in Vietnam
We found that globalization, urbanization and economic development-in the context of historical, social and cultural attitudes-may contribute to increasing child obesity in Vietnam. Obesity prevention through public health and educational institutions should involve policies and programs for healthy eating and exercise, tailored to address parental figures' concerns
Early childhood factors associated with obesity at age 8 in Vietnamese children
We found that increased consumption of powdered milk, honey/sugar, packaged sweets, and prepared restaurants/fast foods are associated with childhood ow/ob. In contrast, breastfeeding for 6 months or longer was protective against childhood ow/ob. These findings suggest that public health programs and campaigns aimed to prevent childhood ow/ob in Vietnam should target early feeding practices
Maternal and Child Nutrition and Oral Health in Urban Vietnam
The global nutrition transition has contributed to child obesity and dental caries in developing countries, including Vietnam. Few studies have described the nutrition and oral health of mothers and children. This a descriptive study of the nutrition and oral health characteristics of a convenience sample of 571 children aged 2 to 5 years and their mothers from 5 urban preschools in Central and South Vietnam. The mothers completed a written surve…
Maintaining Traditions
In lower middle-income economies (LMIE), the nutrition transition from traditional diets to sugary foods and beverages has contributed to widespread early childhood dental caries. This qualitative study explores perceived risk and protective factors, and overall experiences of early childhood nutrition and oral health in indigenous Ecuadorian families participating in a community-based oral health and nutrition intervention. Dental exams of 698 c…
An interpretive study of food, snack and beverage advertisements in rural and urban El Salvador
The advertisements represented a pervasive bombardment of the public with both explicit and subliminal messages to increase consumerism and shift dietary patterns to processed foods and beverages that are low in micronutrients and high in carbohydrates, sugar, fat and salt--dietary changes that are increasing rates of child and adult diseases including tooth decay, obesity, cardiovascular disease and cancer. Global food and beverage industries mu…
Early Childhood Caries, Mouth Pain, and Nutritional Threats in Vietnam
Objectives. We investigated the relationships among early childhood caries (ECC), mouth pain, and nutritional status in children aged 1 to 6 years in Southern and Central Vietnam. Methods. A total of 593 parent–child pairs were recruited from 5 kindergartens or preschools in Ho-Chi Minh City and Da Nang. Parents completed surveys about dietary habits, oral health practices, and children’s mouth pain experience; children received anthropometric as…
Promoting Prenatal and Early Childhood Health
Objectives. There is a critical need for effective, large-scale health communication programs to support parents of children aged 0–5 years. We evaluated the effectiveness of the Kit for New Parents, a multimedia health and parenting resource now distributed annually to 500000 parents in California. Methods. In this quasi-experimental study, 462 mothers in the intervention group and 1011 mothers in the comparison group, recruited from prenatal an…
