  • Student and Staff Knowledge of School Tobacco Policies and Student E‐Cigarette Use, California 2022–2023

Open Access•Shichen Zheng, Suzanne L Stewart et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of School Health•2026

BACKGROUND: Since 2016, California has prohibited e-cigarette use alongside smoking in K-12 schools. School tobacco policies may reduce student e-cigarette use. METHODS: We analyzed 2022 to 2023 California Healthy Kids Survey (CHKS) and School Staff Survey data (n = 219,114). Multivariable logistic regression was used to examine associations between student and staff awareness of school tobacco policies and current e-cigarette use, adjusting for …

Open Access•Lynnea M LoPresto, Diana Cassady et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of School Health•2024

This study evaluates factors associated with LSWP quality among low-income districts. METHODS: In 2018, we collected LSWPs from websites of 200 randomly selected, county-stratified, low-income-serving California public districts. Multivariable linear regression assessed assoc…

  • Home Smoking Bans and Urinary NNAL Levels to Measure Tobacco Smoke Exposure in Chinese American Household Pairs

Open Access•Emiley Chang, Melanie S Dove et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2021

Home smoking bans can reduce tobacco smoke exposure, but little is known about the impact for Chinese American household pairs. In this study of 202 household pairs with low acculturation, 53.9% reported a home smoking ban, 31.7% had inconsistent reports, and 14.4% reported no ban. With decreasing home smoking ban enforcement, more nonsmokers had tobacco smoke exposure (66.1%-86.2%) as measured by the tobacco-specific nitrosamine biomarker urine …

Objectives. We examined the rate of acute myocardial infarction (AMI) deaths in Massachusetts before and after the implementation of a comprehensive smoke-free workplace law in July 2004. Methods. We used Poisson regression models to examine the impact of the state law in cities and towns with and without previous local smoking bans and the effect of the local laws for the period of 1999 through 2006. Results. The AMI mortality rate decreased by …
