Ecological Association of Human Papillomavirus Vaccination with Cervical Dysplasia Prevalence in the United States, 2007–2014
Objectives. To examine prevalence of low- and high-grade cervical lesions over time in a large cohort of US female adolescents and women. Methods. We used health care claims data from 9 million privately insured female patients aged 15 to 39 years to estimate annual prevalence of cytologically detected cervical low-grade (LSIL) and high-grade squamous intraepithelial lesions (HSIL) and high-grade histologically detected cervical intraepithelial n…
Sexually Transmitted Infections Among US Women and Men: Prevalence and Incidence Estimates, 2008
BACKGROUND: Most sexually active people will be infected with a sexually transmitted infection (STI) at some point in their lives. The number of STIs in the United States was previously estimated in 2000. We updated previous estimates to reflect the number of STIs for calendar year 2008. METHODS: We reviewed available data and literature and conservatively estimated incident and prevalent infections nationally for 8 common STIs: chlamydia, gonorr…
Prevalence of Anogenital Warts Among Participants in Private Health Plans in the United States, 2003–2010: Potential Impact of Human Papillomavirus Vaccination
Objectives. We estimated anogenital wart prevalence from 2003 to 2010 by gender and age group in a large US cohort with private insurance to detect potential decreases among people most likely to be affected by human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination. Methods. We restricted health care claims to those from individuals aged 10 to 39 years with continuous insurance within a given year. We derived anogenital wart diagnoses from a diagnosis of condylo…
Estimating the Population Size of Men Who Have Sex with Men in the United States to Obtain HIV and Syphilis Rates§
BACKGROUND: CDC has not previously calculated disease rates for men who have sex with men (MSM) because there is no single comprehensive source of data on population size. To inform prevention planning, CDC developed a national population size estimate for MSM to calculate disease metrics for HIV and syphilis. METHODS: We conducted a systematic literature search and identified seven surveys that provided data on same-sex behavior in nationally re…

Changes in Fluoroquinolone Use for Gonorrhea Following Publication of Revised Treatment Guidelines
Objectives. We evaluated the impact of revised national treatment recommendations on fluoroquinolone use for gonorrhea in selected states. Methods. We evaluated gonorrhea cases reported through the Sexually Transmitted Disease Surveillance Network as treated between July 1, 2006 and May 31, 2008, using interrupted time series analysis. Outcomes were fluoroquinolone treatment overall, by area, and by practice setting. Results. Of 16 126 cases with…
Trends in Primary and Secondary Syphilis Among Men Who Have Sex with Men in the United States
Objectives. We assessed the epidemiology of primary and secondary syphilis in the United States and estimated the percentages of cases occurring among men who have sex with men (MSM). Methods. We reviewed US syphilis surveillance data from 1990 through 2003. We estimated the number of cases occurring among MSM by modeling changes in the ratio of syphilis cases among men to cases among women. Results. During 1990 through 2000, the rate of primary …
Sexually Transmitted Diseases Among American Youth: Incidence and Prevalence Estimates, 2000
CONTEXT In the United States, young people aged 15–24 represent 25% of the sexually experienced population. However, the incidence and prevalence of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) among this age‐group are unknown. METHODS Data from a variety of sources were used to estimate the incidence and prevalence of STDs among 15–24‐year‐olds in the United States in 2000. The quality and reliability of the estimates were categorized as good, fair or p…

Unrecognized HIV Infection Among Patients Attending Sexually Transmitted Disease Clinics
Objectives. This study examined voluntary HIV testing rates in sexually transmitted disease (STD) clinics. Methods. Anonymous, unlinked surveys of HIV seroprevalence and medical chart abstractions were conducted in 28 STD clinics in 14 US cities in 1997. Results. Among the 52 260 patients included in the anonymous HIV serosurveys, voluntary HIV testing rates by clinic ranged from 30% to 99% (median = 58%). Patients not tested were more likely to …
Age-Specific Seroprevalence of HIV, Hepatitis B Virus, and Hepatitis C Virus Infection Among Injection Drug Users Admitted to Drug Treatment in 6 US Cities
Objectives. This study measured age-specific seroprevalence of HIV, hepatitis B virus, and hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection among injection drug users (IDUs) admitted to drug treatment programs in 6 US cities. Methods. Remnant sera collected from persons entering treatment with a history of illicit drug injection were tested for antibodies to HIV, hepatitis C (anti-HCV), and hepatitis B core antigen (anti-HBc). Results. Prevalence of anti-HBc an…
Routine hepatitis B vaccination in a clinic for sexually transmitted diseases
Patients were assigned to one of two vaccine schedules to assess the feasibility of vaccinating a sexually transmitted disease clinic population against hepatitis B virus. Of 1386 patients entering an inner-city clinic between June and July 1990, 611 (44%) accepted a first dose of vaccine. Twenty-one percent of all susceptible patients received at least two doses of vaccine. Annualizing these findings shows that an ongoing program could prevent 6…
