Know-Me
Personalisation is a crucial element in providing person-centred care for people with dementia. This paper presents the development and evaluation of a design toolkit to facilitate the work of designers and healthcare professionals in personalising dementia care. This toolkit, named "Know-me", was grounded in the findings of Ergonomics in Aging, Co-design, and Data-enabled Design, derived from literature review and from the field during a four-ye…
Socio-demographic determinants of worsening in frailty among community-dwelling older people in 11 European countries
BACKGROUND: The rapid increase of frail older people worldwide will have a substantial impact on healthcare systems. The frailty process may be delayed or even reversed, which makes it attractive for early interventions. However, little is known about the determinants of frailty state changes. The aim of this study is to compare socio-demographic determinants of worsening in frailty state in 11 European countries. METHODS: Data of 14,424 communit…
End of the Spectacular Decrease in Fall-Related Mortality Rate
Objectives. We determined time trends in numbers and rates of fall-related mortality in an aging population, for men and women. Methods. We performed secular trend analysis of fall-related deaths in the older Dutch population (persons aged 65 years or older) from 1969 to 2008, using the national Official-Cause-of-Death-Statistics. Results. Between 1969 and 2008, the age-adjusted fall-related mortality rate decreased from 202.1 to 66.7 per 100 000…
Trait-Anxiety and Achievement Motivation are Positively Correlated with Memory Performance in Patients Who Visit a Geriatric Outpatient Clinic with Amnestic Symptoms
Memory performance was studied in relation to anxiety and achievement motivation in a sample of 35 patients who were referred to a geriatric outpatient clinic for their complaints of memory dysfunction. State-anxiety appeared not to be associated with memory performance or the severity of dementia. Trait-anxiety and achievement motivation were associated positively with memory performance and negatively with the severity of dementia. The evaluati…
Value of the Mini-Mental State Examination and Informants' Data for the Detection of Dementia in Geriatric Outpatients
The Dutch version of the Mini-Mental State Examination was administered to 138 elderly patients who were referred to a geriatric outpatient clinic for a variety of reasons. An optimal cut-off point of 24/25 was found for the detection of dementia. At this cut-off point, the Mini-Mental State Examination was 87.6% sensitive and 81.6% specific in detecting dementia. The discriminative validity was influenced by education and by the presence of psyc…
