High levels of all-cause mortality among people who inject drugs from 2018 to 2022
Wastewater Levels of Respiratory Syncytial Virus Associated with Influenza-like Illness Rates in Children—A Case Study in Larissa, Greece (October 2022–January 2023)
The emergence of the COVID-19 pandemic has led to significant progress in the field of wastewater-based surveillance (WBS) of respiratory pathogens and highlighted its potential for a wider application in public health surveillance. This study aimed to evaluate whether monitoring of respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) in wastewater can provide a comprehensive picture of disease transmission at the community level. The study was conducted in Larissa…
Pilot Testing Two Versions of a Social Network Intervention to Increase HIV Testing and Case-finding among Men in South Africa’s Generalized HIV Epidemic
Locating undiagnosed HIV infections is important for limiting transmission. However, there is limited evidence about how best to do so. In South Africa, men have been particularly challenging to reach for HIV testing due, in part, to stigma. We pilot-tested two versions of a network-based case-finding and care-linkage intervention. The first, TRIP, asked "seeds" (original participants) to recruit their sexual and/or injection partners. The second…
A new outbreak of HIV infection among people who inject drugs during the Covid-19 pandemic in Greece
The Effect of Health Education on Adolescents’ Awareness of HPV Infections and Attitudes towards HPV Vaccination in Greece
The present study shows that targeted interactive informational interventions in the school environment leads to a statistically significant increase in both the level of knowledge about HPV and the willingness of young adolescent students to be vaccinated against cervical cancer
A Network Approach to Determine Optimization of PrEP Uptake in Athens, Greece
Estimating the number of people who inject drugs using repeated respondent-driven sampling (RDS) in a community-based program: Implications for the burden of hepatitis C and HIV infections and harm re…
Sociometric Risk Network Structure, HIV Prevalence, and Drug Injection-Related Norms among People Who Inject Drugs (PWID) in Athens, Greece
Background: Structural properties of sociometric networks have been associated with behaviors related to HIV transmission. Very few studies, however, have explored the correlation between sociometric network factors and drug injection-related norms. Methods: This exploratory work: (i) describes basic structural qualities of a sociometric risk network of participants in the Transmission Reduction Intervention Project (TRIP) in Athens, Greece, in t…
Assessment of HIV testing recommendations in Greek specialty guidelines: A missed opportunity and room for improvement for recommending testing
HIV testing for individuals presenting with indicator conditions (ICs) including AIDS-defining conditions (ADCs) is explicitly recommended by European guidelines. We aimed to review specialty guidelines in Greece and assess if HIV was discussed and testing recommended. We reviewed European guidelines to produce a list of 25 ADCs and 48 ICs. We identified Greek guidelines for 11 of 25 (44%) ADCs and 30 of 48 (63%) ICs. In total, 47 guidelines were…
Sexual Mixing and HIV Transmission Potential Among Greek Men Who have Sex with Men: Results from Sophocles
HIV incidence among men who have sex with men (MSM) in Greece remains unchanged despite effective response to a recent outbreak among people who inject drugs (PWID). Network factors are increasingly understood to drive transmission in epidemics. The primary objective of the study was to characterize MSM in Greece, their sexual behaviors, and sexual network mixing patterns. We investigated the relationship between serostatus, sexual behaviors, and…
Pre-exposure Prophylaxis Persistence Among Greek Sexual Minority Men: Results from PrEP for Greece (P4G) Study
Integrated molecular and affiliation network analysis: Core-periphery social clustering is associated with HIV transmission patterns
Health and health needs of migrants in detention in Greece: Shedding light to an unknown reality
BACKGROUND: Population movements have been increasing over the past years in Europe due to socioeconomic factors, global turbulence and conflicts, especially in the area of Middle East. The presence of migrant populations in Europe challenges health systems due to increased requirements for health care provision. However, to date there is limited published data on the burden of disease among this population (in Greece and elsewhere). Our objectiv…
Identifying, linking, and treating people who inject drugs and were recently infected with HIV in the context of a network-based intervention
Identifying and linking people to care soon after HIV infection could limit viral transmission and protect their health. This work aims at describing the continuum of care among recently HIV-infected people who inject drugs (PWID) and participated in an intervention in the context of an HIV outbreak in Athens, Greece. The Transmission Reduction Intervention Project (TRIP) conducted risk network-based contact tracing and screened people for recent…
Pre-exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) Awareness and Use Within High HIV Transmission Networks
Experiences of Stigma and Support Reported by Participants in a Network Intervention to Reduce HIV Transmission in Athens, Greece; Odessa, Ukraine; and Chicago, Illinois
A Network Intervention to Locate Newly HIV Infected Persons Within MSM Networks in Chicago
Homelessness and Other Risk Factors for HIV Infection in the Current Outbreak Among Injection Drug Users in Athens, Greece
Objectives. We examined HIV prevalence and risk factors among injection drug users (IDUs) in Athens, Greece, during an HIV outbreak. Methods. We used respondent-driven sampling (RDS) to recruit 1404 IDUs to the Aristotle intervention in August to October 2012. We interviewed participants and tested for HIV. We performed bivariate and multivariate analyses. Results. Estimated HIV prevalence was 19.8% (RDS-weighted prevalence = 14.8%). Odds of infe…
