  • Progression of a large syphilis outbreak in rural North Carolina through space and time

    Open Access•Lani C Fox, William C Miller et al.•ARTICLE•PLOS Global Public Health•2023

In 2001, the primary and secondary syphilis incidence rate in rural Columbus County, North Carolina was the highest in the nation. To understand the development of syphilis outbreaks in rural areas, we developed and used the Bayesian Maximum Entropy Graphical User Interface (BMEGUI) to map syphilis incidence rates from 1999–2004 in seven adjacent counties in North Carolina. Using BMEGUI, incidence rate maps were constructed for two aggregation sc…

  • Distance to testing sites and its association with timing of HIV diagnosis

    Anna B Cope, Kimberly A Powers et al.•ARTICLE•AIDS Care•2016

Early HIV diagnosis enables prompt treatment initiation, thereby contributing to decreased morbidity, mortality, and transmission. We aimed to describe the association between distance from residence to testing sites and HIV disease stage at diagnosis. Using HIV surveillance data, we identified all new HIV diagnoses made at publicly funded testing sites in central North Carolina during 2005-2013. Early-stage HIV was defined as acute HIV (antibody…

  • Previously Undiagnosed HIV Infections Identified Through Cluster Investigation, North Carolina, 2002–2007

Open Access•Natalie Dailey Garnes, Natalie J M Dailey Garnes et al.•ARTICLE•AIDS and Behavior•2014

  • Glen or Glenda

Elizabeth A Torrone, Elizabeth Torrone et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•2010•Citada por: 1•Referências: 15

Objectives. We assessed agreement of reported gender of sex partners in 2 statewide HIV databases linked by client identifiers. Methods. Counseling, testing, and referral (CTR) records on all men aged 18 to 30 years who tested newly positive for HIV in North Carolina between 2000 and 2005 were matched to data abstracted from partner counseling and referral services (PCRS) records. We compared client-reported gender of sex partners at the time of …

  • Barriers and facilitators to HIV testing and linkage to primary care

    Sandra I Mccoy, William C Miller et al.•ARTICLE•AIDS Care•2009

Persons with unrecognized HIV infection forgo timely clinical intervention and may unknowingly transmit HIV to partners. However, in the USA, unrecognized infection and late diagnosis are common. To understand barriers and facilitators to HIV testing and care, we conducted a qualitative study of 24 HIV infected persons attending a Southeastern HIV clinic who presented with clinically advanced illness. The primary barrier to HIV testing prior to d…

  • Social support and delays seeking care after HIV diagnosis, North Carolina, 2000–2006

    Sandra I Mccoy, Ronald P Strauss et al.•ARTICLE•AIDS Care•2009

Many adults in the USA enter primary care late in the course of HIV infection, countering the clinical benefits of timely HIV services and missing opportunities for risk reduction. Our objective was to determine if perceived social support was associated with delay entering care after an HIV diagnosis. Two hundred and sixteen patients receiving primary care at a large, university-based HIV outpatient clinic in North Carolina were included in the …

  • Identifying People with Acute HIV Infection

    Open Access•Lisa B Hightow-Weidman, Lisa Hightow‐Weidman et al.•ARTICLE•AIDS and Behavior•2009

  • Social Determinants of Hiv Infection in the Deep South

Irene A Doherty, Peter A Leone et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•2007•Citada por: 2•Referências: 9

The commentary presented by Reif et al.1 summarizing the state of HIV in the southeastern United States did not fully address key determinants that explain, in part, how the interaction between individual-level factors, patterns of sexual partnerships and sexual networks, and societal forces affect HIV transmission

  • HIV Testing Among Young Adults in the United States

Trang Nguyen, Trang Quyen Nguyen et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•2006•Citada por: 1•Referências: 14

We estimated prevalence and odds ratios for self-reported HIV testing among sexually experienced young adults using nationally representative data obtained from Wave III of the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health (Add Health). The prevalence of testing in the past year was 18.8%. Young adults who had private or no health insurance were less likely to report testing than were young adults who had public health insurance, particularly …

  • Barriers to asymptomatic screening and other STD services for adolescents and young adults

Open Access•Elizabeth Cuervo Tilson, Victoria Sánchez et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2004

Further research is warranted to evaluate improving convenience, efficiency, and privacy of existing services; adding urine-based screening and new services closer to neighborhoods; and using mass media to disseminate STD information as strategies to increase STD screening

  • Psychosocial factors and psychological symptoms

    Open Access•Robert A Carels, Donald H Baucom et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Community Psychology•1998•Referências: 25

The association between psychosocial factors (e.g., social support, coping, stress, relationship status, sexual orientation) and psychological symptoms within an HIV-positive sample population that has been underrepresented in prior research was examined in this study. The study's sample reflects many African Americans, injecting drug users, heterosexuals, and women. Structural equation modeling was used to examine the relations among psychosocia…
