  • Condom Use Trajectories in Adolescence and the Transition to Adulthood

Open Access•Emily Pingel, Emily S Pingel et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Research on Adolescence•2012•Cited by: 6•References: 13

Few studies have investigated how mother and father support differ on predicting youths' sexual risk behavior. We therefore examined the influence of parental support on condom use trajectories and its correlates in a predominantly African American sample [(N=627; 53% female; M = 14.86 years (SD=. 64)] from adolescence to young adulthood. We used hierarchical growth curve modeling to examine the relationship between condom use, substance use, psy…

  • Growth Trajectories of Sexual Risk Behavior in Adolescence and Young Adulthood

Stevenson Fergus, Marc A Zimmerman et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•2007•Cited by: 22•References: 37

Objectives. Adolescence and young adulthood (ages 18–25 years) are periods of development and change, which include experimentation with and adoption of new roles and behaviors. We investigated longitudinal trajectories of sexual risk behaviors across these time periods and how these trajectories may be different for varying demographic groups. Methods. We developed multilevel growth models of sexual risk behavior for a predominantly African Amer…

  • Adolescent Resilience

Stevenson Fergus, Marc A Zimmerman•ARTICLE•Annual Review of Public Health•2005

Adolescent resilience research differs from risk research by focusing on the assets and resources that enable some adolescents to overcome the negative effects of risk exposure. We discuss three models of resilience—the compensatory, protective, and challenge models—and describe how resilience differs from related concepts. We describe issues and limitations related to resilience and provide an overview of recent resilience research related to ad…

  • Psychosocial Correlates of Smoking Trajectories Among Urban African American Adolescents

    Open Access•Stevenson Fergus, Marc A Zimmerman et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Adolescent Research•2005•References: 3

Little is known of smoking trajectories or of the correlates of smoking trajectories among African American youth. Ninth-grade African American adolescents (n = 566) were interviewed in Year 1 and then were subsequently interviewed annually for 3 additional years. Five trajectories of cigarette smokers were identified: abstainers, experimenters/consistent light smokers, consistent regular smokers, accelerators, and quitters. Psychological well-be…

  • Confronting Stigma

    Open Access•Jesus Ramirez-Valles, Stevenson Fergu et al.•ARTICLE•Hispanic Journal of Behavioral…•2005•Cited by: 20•References: 45

Theories of social integration and stress process posit that community involvement may buffer or may compensate the adverse effects of stigma on psychological well-being. In this article, the authors explore this thesis in a stigmatized and seldom studied group of HIV-positive Latino gay men. Specifically, they examine the effects of community involvement in AIDS and gay-related organizations (e.g., volunteerism and activism) and experienced homo…
