Exploring Paleogeographic Conditions at Two P aleolithic Sites in N avarino, Southwest G reece, Dated by Optically Stimulated Luminescence
In this paper, we employed optically stimulated luminescence ( OSL ) dating of sediments from two archaeological sites located in N avarino, M essenia, southwestern G reece, to deduce a chronology for the archaeological sites. Archaeological surveys identified two P aleolithic sites on fossilized coastal dunes. Chipped stone tool assemblages were identified eroding out of paleosols developed in the dunes. The assemblage from one site lacked disti…

Radiometric dating of the type-site for Homo heidelbergensis at Mauer, Germany
The Mauer mandible, holotype of Homo heidelbergensis , was found in 1907 in fluvial sands deposited by the Neckar River 10 km southeast of Heidelberg, Germany. The fossil is an important key to understanding early human occupation of Europe north of the Alps. Given the associated mammal fauna and the geological context, the find layer has been placed in the early Middle Pleistocene, but confirmatory chronometric evidence has hitherto been missing…

Geoarchaeological Evidence From Desert Loess in the Nazca–palpa Region, Southern Peru
The paper presents proxies from an interdisciplinary geoarchaeological working group. Sediment analyses and geomorphological studies, radiocarbon ages of snail shells and luminescence dating of loess allow a preliminary chronology of the environmental evolution of the eastern Atacama desert, Nazca–Palpa region (southern Peru). Until now, typical desert loess was unknown from the arid western flank of the Andes (southern Peru). The loess points to…
Optical Dating of Granitic Stone Surfaces
A novel luminescence methodology for dating surfaces of granitoid rocks is presented, with encouraging results for archaeological stone structures. It is based on the zeroing of the latent signal of optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) in feldspar and quartz grains of the stone surface during exposure to daylight. When after bleaching the surface is shielded from light, the OSL signal builds up again, such that its intensity provides an age fo…
The Chronostratigraphy and Geoarchaeological Significance of an Alluvial Geoarchive
The Basin of Phlious in southern Greece is known for its thick colluvial and alluvial deposits from the Holocene. It offers a good opportunity to reconstruct the history of Holocene soil erosion and its interaction with historical farming activities. In this study, we present new results based on optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) dating from the Basin of Phlious. The comparison between OSL and 14 C AMS ages shows good agreement, and demonst…
The history of Holocene soil erosion in the Phlious Basin, NE Peloponnese, Greece, based on optical dating
Anthropogenic induced soil erosion has occurred in the Mediterranean during historic and pre historic times, but precise timeframes for periods of past soil erosion are largely missing due to the lack of datable material and suitable dating methods. In this study, optical dating of colluvial sediments from the Phlious Basin, NE Peloponnese, Greece, was applied. The results show that soil erosion derived colluvium formed under a Mediterranean type…

Infrared Stimulated Luminescence Dating of Archaeosediments
In this study the feasibility of infrared stimulated luminescence (IRSL) for dating loessic colluvial sediments, deposited as a result of human activity, is investigated. It is demonstrated that the ‘IRSL‐clock’is reset after a few minutes of daylight exposure even under foggy weather conditions. Samples of independently known age were taken at the Neolithic Bruchsal Aue site in south‐west Germany. Different laboratory procedures are tried and a …

Optical Dating of Anthropogenic Sediments at the Archaeological Site of Herrenbrunnenbuckel, Bretten‐bauerbach (Germany)
Optical dating was applied to natural and anthropogenic silts at an Iron Age settlement in southern Germany. The natural sediments were dated accurately and allowed study of the human impact on the landscape. The studied anthropogenic sediments were infills of cellars and ditches. Again, deposits derived from soil erosion proved to be datable using infrared‐optically stimulated luminescence. However, optical dating of fine grained sediments was a…

Fission-track dating in paleoanthropology
During the last 30 years, fission-track dating has become a versatile geochronological tool.1 Fission-tracks, discovered in the early 1960s,2 were subsequently used to determine the age of minerals and glasses.3 Although low track densities can make fission-track dating tedious and time-consuming, the technique can provide important data for material in time ranges as young as the last few million years. In anthropological studies, fission-track …

Warm Period Growth of Travertine during the Last Interglaciation in Southern Germany
Late-Quaternary travertine at two sites near Stuttgart formed entirely during interglacial periods. The travertine contains structures from growth induced by bacteria, and such structures have been dated by 230 Th/U mass spectrometry. The resulting ages from both sites imply growth episodes of short duration, with growth rates up to 5 mm yr −1 , at 99,800 ± 1300 yr B.P. (2σ n = 8) and 105,900 ± 1300 yr B.P. (2σ n = 7). These episodes were likely …

Comments on “Mesoamerican Evidence of Pre-Columbian Transoceanic Contacts” by Hristov and Genovés, in Ancient Mesoamerica 10
In the paper by Hristov and Genovés (1999), the main supporting argument for their hypothesis of pre-Columbian transoceanic contacts is a thermoluminescence (TL) age of 1780 ± 400 b.p. obtained for a small terracotta head found in central Mexico. This age value and the reference cited are not correct. In this contribution, we clarify the context and give for the first time our final results of the TL age analysis of the figurine. Due to methodolo…
