  • Decline of Language Among Women and Men With Alzheimer's Disease

    Liesi E Hebert, R J Wilson et al.•ARTICLE•The Journals of Gerontology…•2000•References: 3

Previous research raises the possibility that gender differences occur in language function in Alzheimer's disease, but this hypothesis has not been evaluated systematically in longitudinal studies. The authors examined the association of gender with rate of decline in language and other cognitive functions among 410 persons with Alzheimer's disease. Participants were recruited from a dementia clinic and followed for up to 5 annual evaluations. F…

  • Cognitive Activity in Older Persons From a Geographically Defined Population

    R Scott Wilson, David A Bennett et al.•ARTICLE•The Journals of Gerontology…•1999•Cited by: 15•References: 4

Patterns of cognitive activity, and their relation to cognitive function, were examined in a geographically defined, biracial population of persons aged 65 years and older. Persons (N = 6,162) were given cognitive performance tests and interviewed about their participation in common cognitive activities, like reading a newspaper. Overall, more frequent participation in cognitive activities was associated with younger age, more education, higher f…

  • Social Networks and Disability Transitions Across Eight Intervals of Yearly Data in the New Haven Epese

Carlos F Mendes De Leon, Thomas A Gla et al.•ARTICLE•The Journals of Gerontology…•1999•Cited by: 39•References: 5

The findings lend further support for the role of social relationships in important health outcomes in old age. They suggest that being "embedded" in a social network of relatives and friends reduces risk for ADL disability, and enhances recovery from ADL disability

  • Concordance between Direct Observation and Staff Rating of Behavior in Nursing Home Residents with Alzheimer's Disease

    Judith J McCann, David W Gilley et al.•ARTICLE•The Journals of Gerontology…•1997•Cited by: 2•References: 2

This study examined concordance between staff ratings and direct observations of behavior in 177 nursing home residents with Alzheimer's disease. During a structured interview, the staff member who had the most frequent contact with each resident completed three standardized behavioral rating scales. Direct observation of behavior (60 observations per resident) was conducted concurrently by trained nonparticipant observers using a structured time…

  • Functional disability among elderly blacks and whites in two diverse areas

Carlos F Mendes De Leon, Gerda G Fillenbaum et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•1995•Cited by: 6•References: 17

This study examines the prevalence of functional disability (limitation in at least one basic activity of daily living) among elderly Black and White community residents in the New Haven (n = 2812) and North Carolina (n = 4162) sites of the Established Populations for Epidemiologic Studies of the Elderly (EPESE). In New Haven, elderly Blacks, particularly women below age 75, had a higher prevalence of disability compared with Whites, which was pa…
