Occupational health impacts of climate-related emergency events on health system workers in British Columbia
This study investigates the impacts of climate-related emergency events on health system workers (HSWs) in British Columbia (BC), Canada. By conceptualizing risks faced by the workforce, it also identifies adaptive strategies mitigating climate-related occupational hazards and stresses and generates recommendations to further enhance the resilience of HSWs. A semi-structured interview process with participants (N = 28) from a wide range of HSW ro…
The human health effects of unconventional oil and gas development (Uogd)
OBJECTIVE: Unconventional oil and gas development (UOGD, sometimes termed "fracking" or "hydraulic fracturing") is an industrial process to extract methane gas and/or oil deposits. Many chemicals used in UOGD have known adverse human health effects. Canada is a major producer of UOGD-derived gas with wells frequently located in and around rural and Indigenous communities. Our objective was to conduct a scoping review to identify the extent of res…
Where are the ecological determinants of health
Canada needs a funding institute focused on environments, health, and societal well-being research
Cumulative Impacts of Diverse Land Uses in British Columbia, Canada
(1) Objectives: Cumulative impacts refer to the legacies of land use decisions on environmental, community and health values. New integrative impact assessment tools are required to assess cumulative impacts on diverse values to meet sustainability goals in the 21st century. In this contribution, the CalEnviroScreen methodology-a screening tool capable of merging environmental, socioeconomic and health data-is applied to Local Health Areas in Bri…
How to estimate (and not to estimate) war deaths
Stijn van Weezel and Michael Spagat (2017) have critiqued our 2011 report of mortality in Iraq following the 2003 US-led invasion in this issue of Research & Politics. In this response, we make our case for reporting both direct and indirect excess war-related deaths (while distinguishing the difference), defend our efforts to account for survival bias, and provide evidence for including all household-reported deaths, not just those cases where a…

The Breathe-Easy Home
Objectives. We examined the asthma-control benefit of moving into an asthma-friendly Breathe-Easy home (BEH). Methods. We used a quasi-experimental design to compare the asthma outcomes of 2 groups of low-income children and adolescents with asthma: 34 participants who moved into a BEH, and a local matched cohort of 68 participants who had received a previous asthma-control intervention. Both groups received in-home asthma education. BEHs were co…
Climate Change and Health in British Columbia
This is a case study describing how climate change may affect the health of British Columbians and to suggest a way forward to promote health and policy research, and adaptation to these changes. After reviewing the limited evidence of the impacts of climate change on human health we have developed five principles to guide the development of research and policy to better predict future impacts of climate change on health and to enhance adaptation…
Trends in Childhood Leukemia in Basrah, Iraq, 1993–2007
Objectives. Through a sister-university relationship between the University of Basrah and the University of Washington, we analyzed Ibn Ghazwan Hospital's leukemia registry data to evaluate trends in childhood leukemia since 1993. Methods. We documented leukemia cases among children aged 0 to 14 years for each of the last 15 years. Population data were obtained from a 1997 census and various subsequent estimates to calculate rates. Results. We ob…
Hagopian Et Al. Respond
We thank our German colleagues for their interest in our work to measure the changing rates of pediatric leukemia in Basrah, Iraq, over the last 15 years. We appreciate their efforts before ours to measure cancer rates in the region, and their work to support the development of an Iraqi cancer registry, including valuable training for Iraqi epidemiologists. We would be interested in hearing more about their efforts to design a case–control study …

The Seattle-King County Healthy Homes Project
Objectives. We assessed the effectiveness of a community health worker intervention focused on reducing exposure to indoor asthma triggers. Methods. We conducted a randomized controlled trial with 1-year follow-up among 274 low-income households containing a child aged 4–12 years who had asthma. Community health workers provided in-home environmental assessments, education, support for behavior change, and resources. Participants were assigned to…
