  • Sacrifice as Public Spectacle (Pompē) in the Palestinian Talmud

    Open Access•Michael D Swartz, M Swartz•ARTICLE•Religion in the Roman Empire•2025

The Rabbis of Roman Palestine (third to fifth century ce) constructed a legal system that included a comprehensive set of laws and narrative descriptions of the lost sacrificial rituals of the Jerusalem Temple. This system is exemplified in the tractate Yoma of the Palestinian Talmud, which describes the Yom Kippur sacrifice in great detail. Although Leviticus 16 only mentions the High Priest, Yoma describes a very public ritual. This study focus…

  • Textual Archipelagos

    M Swartz•ARTICLE•Jewish Studies Quarterly•2025

This essay proposes new evidentiary models for the study of Jewish society in Late Antiquity based on textual corpora considered to be outside of the conventional rabbinic canon - such as magical literature, manuals of divination, and liturgical and occasional poetry in Hebrew and Aramaic. It argues that it is helpful to look at this evidence as a kind of archipelago, a cluster of outcroppings of deeper cultural production; that the relationships…

  • Effects of cigarette smoking and nicotine dependence on adherence to antiretroviral therapy among HIV-positive patients in Vietnam

    Nhung Nguyen, Nhung T P Nguyen et al.•ARTICLE•AIDS Care•2016

Cigarette smoking is increasingly recognized as an indicator for inferior adherence to antiretroviral therapy (ART) among HIV-positive patients. Given the limited body of work on this issue, we aimed to explore the relations between cigarette smoking, nicotine dependence, and ART adherence in Vietnam. A cross-sectional study of 1050 HIV-positive people was conducted from January to September 2013 in Hanoi (the capital) and Nam Dinh (a rural city)…

  • Childhood abuse and initial presentation for HIV care

    Michael Mugavero, M J Mugavero et al.•ARTICLE•AIDS Care•2007

An alarmingly high prevalence of childhood sexual and physical abuse has been observed in HIV-infected men and women, with rates several times higher than observed in the general population. Childhood abuse history has been associated with worse antiretroviral adherence and negative health behaviours in HIV-infected patients. This study evaluates the relationship between childhood abuse and the timing of presentation for HIV care. Participants in…
