  • Association of Physical Activity in Midlife With Mobility Limitations and Falls in Old Age—A Longitudinal Twin Study

Open Access•Pia Pullinen, Jari Parkkari et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Aging and Health•2025

ObjectiveTo study the associations between midlife physical activity and later-life mobility limitation and falls in monozygotic and dizygotic twin pairs.MethodsMidlife physical activity data from 1975, 1981, and 1990 questionnaires were drawn from the Older Finnish Twin Cohort. In the third survey, the participants were aged 46-50 years. Mobility limitations (none, some or severe) and falls (no falls, single fall or recurrent falls) were self-re…

  • Psychosocial and health behavioural characteristics of longitudinal physical activity patterns

Open Access•Tuula Aira, Tommi Vasankari et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2023

Diverse factors characterise longitudinal PA patterns over the transition to young adulthood. Sports club participation contributes to maintained PA. Moreover, a father-adolescent relationship that supports open communication may be one determinant for sustained PA during adolescence. A healthier diet and non-smoking as a young adult are associated with more favourable PA development

  • Factors associated with body size perception among adolescent goal-oriented sports participants and non-participants

Open Access•Leevi Mäkituomas, Laura Heikkilä et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2022

Background Regardless of competitive athletes’ body image pressures, only few studies have focused on adolescent sport participants’ body image and the findings are inconclusive. Furthermore, the role of competitive goals in sports on adolescents’ body size perception has not been studied. We examined the factors associated with adolescents’ competitive goals in sports and body size perception, and the associations between adolescents’ competitiv…

  • Effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of neuromuscular exercise and back care counseling in female healthcare workers with recurrent non-specific low back pain

Open Access•Jaana Suni, Päivi Kolu et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2018

    ClinicalTrials.gov, NCT01465698 November 7, 2011 (prospective)

  • Coaches’ Health Promotion Activity and Substance Use in Youth Sports

Open Access•Kwok Ng, Kasper Mäkelä et al.•ARTICLE•Societies•2017•References: 1

There is an increasing amount of evidence suggesting youth sports clubs are an important setting for health promotion. Adolescents in sport club settings can benefit from exposures of positive and negative consequences to health. To better understand the sport club context and coaches’ health promotion activity in substance use prevention, this study compares sport club members with non-members aged between 14–16 years old on their experience and…

  • Low physical fitness is a strong predictor of health problems among young men

Open Access•Henri Taanila, Antti JM Hemminki et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2011

The majority of the observed risk factors are modifiable. Thus preventive measures and programs could be implemented. The findings suggest that increasing both aerobic and muscular fitness is a desirable goal in a pre-training program before entering military service. Attention to appropriate waist circumference and strategies addressing psychological well-being may strengthen the preventive program. Optimally the effectiveness of these programs …

  • Adolescents' health and health behaviour as predictors of injury death. A prospective cohort follow-up of 652,530 person-years

Open Access•Ville M Mattila, Jari Parkkari et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2008

Health compromising behaviour adopted at adolescence has a clear impact on the risk of injury death in adulthood independent from socioeconomic background. On the other hand, poor health as such is not a significant predictor of injury death. Promotion of healthy lifestyle among adolescents as part of public health programmes would seem an appropriate way to contribute to adolescent injury prevention

  • Adolescent survey non-response and later risk of death. A prospective cohort study of 78 609 persons with 11-year follow-up

Open Access•Ville M Mattila, Jari Parkkari et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2007

Our study demonstrated significantly increased rates of death among adolescent non-respondents in a follow-up. The highest hazard ratios were seen in disease- and violence-related deaths. The death rate varied between respondents and non-respondents by death type. Increased rates of death persisted beyond the age of 25

  • Fall-Induced Deaths Among Elderly People

Pekka Kannus, Jari Parkkari et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•2005•Cited by: 4•References: 6

Falls and fall-induced injuries in older people are a major public health problem in modern societies with aging populations. Injury is the fifth leading cause of death in older adults, and most of these fatal injuries are related to falls. We have assessed the nationwide trends in fall-induced deaths of older people in Finland for more than 3 decades (1971–2002), and the results showed that the number of fall-induced deaths among elderly Finns i…
