Using Registered Dental Hygienists to Promote a School-Based Approach to Dental Public Health
We examine a strategy for improving oral health in the United States by focusing on low-income children in school-based settings. Vulnerable children often experience cultural, social, economic, structural, and geographic barriers when trying to access dental services in traditional dental office settings. These disparities have been discussed for more than a decade in multiple US Department of Health and Human Services publications. One solution…

There is a large rural‐urban disparity in the proportion of hospitals that are accredited by the Joint Commission on the Accreditation of Health Care Organizations (JCAHO). Several factors can influence whether a hospital participates in the accreditation process. A few of those factors include the hospital's size, case mix and ownership. However, even after controlling for many of these factors, hospitals in the most rural locations are less lik…

Medical Associates HMO
Medical Associates HMO is based on a multi specialty group practice located in a small metropolitan area. That group practice regards the HMO as an important strategy for maintaining and increasing patient referrals. A substantial portion of the HMOs service area is rural; therefore, the HMOs relationships with rural providers are important because they affect its ability to attract enrollees from rural areas and, potentially, non‐HMO referrals a…

These physicians chose to contract with the HMO to obtain new patients and to retain existing patients. They are satisfied that their participation has accomplished these goals. Their reimbursement arrangements are easy to understand,…

Measuring and Evaluating the Performance of Vertically Integrated Rural Health Networks
The grouting interest in health care networks is extraordinary given the lack of a common understanding of what networks are and what they can accomplish. The purpose of this article is to develop a conceptual approach to the study of vertically integrated rural health networks. This article provides a network typology, a framework for assessing network performance, and examples of measurable performance indicators. It concludes with a descriptio…
Availability of Rural Minnesota Obstetric Services
In the late 1980s several published articles predicted a crisis in the availability of obstetric care due to declining numbers of rural obstetrical providers. Several state and national studies documented the adverse impact of malpractice and time demands on both urban and rural physicians. But only limited information is available to document current trends in rural obstetrical practice and assess whether or not the predicted crisis occurred. Th…
