  • How smokers may react to cigarette taxes and price increases in Brazil

Open Access•Analice Gigliotti, Analice de Paula Gigliotti et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2014

Taxes and prices increases have great potential to stimulate cessation or reduction of cigarette consumption further among two important vulnerable populations of smokers in Brazil: young smokers and those of low educational level. The results from the present study also suggest that seeking illegal products may reduce the impact of increased taxes, but does not eliminate it

  • Blood cigarettes

Kristof Titeca, Luk Joossens et al.•ARTICLE•Tobacco Control•2011

Our research suggests that cigarette smuggling in this region is not primarily the result of different taxation levels in neighbouring states, but rather the outcome of weak state capacity, high levels of corruption and the activities of rebel groups. Under these conditions smuggling cigarettes becomes an attractive option as taxation is so easily avoided. This explains why in the low-income countries in this study there are high levels of smuggl…

  • Progress in combating cigarette smuggling

The evidence strongly suggests that the key to controlling smuggling is controlling the supply chain, and that the supply chain is controlled to a great extent by the tobacco industry

We analyzed data on homicides (1995 to 2005) and violence against women (2000 to 2005) from the Diadema (population 360 000) police archives usi…

  • Cigarette smuggling in Europe

    Luk Joossens, Martin Raw•ARTICLE•Tobacco Control•1998

Cigarette smuggling, now on the increase, is so widespread and well organised that it poses a serious threat to public health. This threat comes from two principal directions. First, smuggling makes cigarettes available cheaply, thereby increasing consumption. A third of annual global exports go to the contraband market, representing an enormous impact on consumption, and thus causing an increase in the burden of disease, especially in poorer cou…
