Exploring Methods to Evaluate HPAI Transmission Risk in Iowa During Peak HPAI Incidence, February 2022–December 2023
Highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI), H5N1 strain, began to circulate in the United States on 8 February 2022. The state of Iowa lost the most domestic poultry to HPAI from February 2022-December 2023. This study conducted preliminary evaluations on two environmental risk factors, (inland water surface area, Canada geese abundance) and the availability of the data needed to evaluate them. Higher Canada geese abundance was significantly associ…
Access to Interpretable Data to Support Disproportionate Health Risks from Industrial Releases
Latinx communities face disproportionate environmental injustices and are targeted due to systematic economic and political inequities. This research evaluates the ease at which links between industrial releases and risk of adverse health effects can be defined to influence policy change in Houston, TX. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)'s Toxic Release Inventory (TRI) is the most comprehensive public database on industrial facilities' tox…
A New Model of Learning
Over the past 5 years, we have taught this methodology to over 680 students with strong, student-oriented results. The teams created and presented more than 100 strategies, addressing a diverse set of environmental challenges that include water contamination, gun violence, air pollution, environmental justice, health security, and climate change. Developing the strategies helped the students understand environmental threats in a more holistic way…
Prenatal exposure to air pollution is associated with altered brain structure, function, and metabolism in childhood
Background Prenatal exposure to air pollution disrupts cognitive, emotional, and behavioral development. The brain disturbances associated with prenatal air pollution are largely unknown. Methods In this prospective cohort study, we estimated prenatal exposures to fine particulate matter (PM 2.5 ) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH), and then assessed their associations with measures of brain anatomy, tissue microstructure, neurometabolite…
Gestational weight gain and obesity, adiposity and body size in A frican– A merican and D ominican children in the B ronx and N orthern M anhattan
Gestational weight gain (GWG) is potentially modifiable and is associated with infant size and body composition; however, long-term effects on childhood obesity have not been reported among multi-ethnic urban populations. We examined the association between GWG and child anthropometric measures and body composition at 7 years [waist circumference (WC), body mass index z-score (BMIZ), obesity (BMIZ ≥95%ile) and bioelectrical impedance analysis est…
Chlorpyrifos Exposure and Urban Residential Environment Characteristics as Determinants of Early Childhood Neurodevelopment
Objectives. We evaluated whether neighborhood characteristics correlated with early neurodevelopment and whether these characteristics confounded the previously reported association between exposure to chlorpyrifos (an organophosphate insecticide) and neurodevelopment. Methods. We obtained prenatal addresses, chlorpyrifos exposure data, and 36-month Psychomotor Development Index (PDI) and Mental Development Index (MDI) scores for a birth cohort i…
Sexual risk reduction among non-injection drug users
We conducted a randomized controlled trial of a sexual risk-reduction intervention targeting non-injection drug users (NIDUs) and members of their drug-use/sexual networks (N=270). The intervention was based primarily on the social-influencing approach, and was delivered in four sessions. Sexual risk behaviors were examined at baseline, and 3, 6, 9, and 12 months after the completion of the intervention using the vaginal equivalent episodes (VEE)…
HIV prevention with severely mentally ill men
We conducted a randomised clinical trial to test the efficacy of an enhanced version of an intervention previously shown to reduce HIV sexual risk behaviours among men with severe mental illness. One-hundred-and-forty-nine subjects aged 18-59 years were randomly assigned to the experimental or control conditions. Sexual risk behaviours were assessed every three months for 12-months. The primary analysis compared experimental and control groups wi…
