Open Access•Annika Laukamp, Luise Prüfer-Krämer et al.•ARTICLE•BMC International Health and…•2019

BACKGROUND: The war in Syria has led to the biggest refugee crisis of our time. Unaccompanied asylum seeking adolescents (UASA) are a particularly vulnerable subgroup of refugees. This study aims to describe the weight status, health behaviour and disease spectrum of Syrian UASA in comparison to UASA from other world regions. METHODS: The study was conducted as a prospective cross-sectional analysis of health metrics and diagnoses from 346 UASA (…

  • Disability Weights for Chronic Mercury Intoxication Resulting from Gold Mining Activities

Open Access•Nadine Steckling, Brecht Devleesschauwer et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2017

In artisanal small-scale gold mining, mercury is used for gold-extraction, putting miners and nearby residents at risk of chronic metallic mercury vapor intoxication (CMMVI). Burden of disease (BoD) analyses allow the estimation of the public health relevance of CMMVI, but until now there have been no specific CMMVI disability weights (DWs). The objective is to derive DWs for moderate and severe CMMVI. Disease-specific and generic health state de…

  • Sociodemographic and health-(care-)related characteristics of online health information seekers

Open Access•Laura Nölke, Monika Mensing et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2015

In order to achieve equity in health, health-related Internet use by the socially deprived should be promoted through measures to increase their level of e-health literacy. Furthermore, longitudinal studies are needed in order to gain reliable data/results on determinants of health-related Internet use

  • Knowledge and attitude towards child marriage practice among women married as children-a qualitative study in urban slums of Lahore, Pakistan

Open Access•Muazzam Nasrullah, Rubeena Zakar et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2014

Raising awareness of the negative health outcomes of child marriage, implementing and enforcing strict laws against child marriage practice, promoting civil, sexual and reproductive health rights for women, can help eliminate child marriages in Pakistan

  • Determinants of Diarrhoea in ‘Urban’ Slums of Dhaka and Adjacent Rural Areas

Open Access•MMH Khan, Arina Zanuzdana et al.•ARTICLE•Population Space and Place•2013•References: 5

Diarrhoeal diseases constitute an important public health problem in many developing countries including Bangladesh. This study aimed to report the household‐level determinants of diarrhoea using the baseline information of cohort studies conducted in 2008 and 2009. The variation of diarrhoea by 3‐month period was also reported. A total of 3,207 households were systematically selected from 12 slums in Dhaka and three rural villages located nearby…

  • Association between gap in spousal education and domestic violence in India and Bangladesh

Open Access•Daniel Rapp, Beate Zoch et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2012

Our analysis revealed no increased DV among wives with a higher educational level than their husbands. Moreover, the results point towards a decrease of severe violence with an increase in education levels among spouses. However, the model did not explain a satisfying amount of DV. Therefore, further research should be done to reveal unknown determinants so that suitable interventions to reduce DV can be developed

  • Mental health in the slums of Dhaka - a geoepidemiological study

Open Access•Oliver Gruebner, Md Mobarak Hossain Khan et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2012

Factors determining mental well-being were related to the socio-physical environment and individual level characteristics. Given that mental well-being is associated with physiological well-being, our study may provide crucial information for developing better health care and disease prevention programmes in slums of Dhaka and other comparable settings

  • Seasonal variations of all-cause and cause-specific mortality by age, gender, and socioeconomic condition in urban and rural areas of Bangladesh

Open Access•Katrin Burkart, Mobarak Hossain Khan et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal for Equity…•2011

This study clearly demonstrated the complex and dynamic nature of seasonal impacts on mortality. The modifying effect of spatial and population characteristics were highlighted. While tropical regions have been, and still are, associated with a marked excess of mortality in summer, only a weakly pronounced secondary summer peak could be observed for Bangladesh, possibly due to the reduced incidence of diarrhoea-related fatalities. These findings …

  • Associations between preschool attendance and developmental impairments in pre-school children in a six-year retrospective survey

Open Access•Heribert Stich, Heribert L Stich et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2006

Our results demonstrate that there are high prevalence rates for physical and mental impairments among preschool children. Furthermore, children without preschool experience are a risk group for struggling with educational successes. The associations between the duration of preschool attendance and location of preschool attended and rates of impairment need replication and further exploration. Larger prospective studies are needed to examine if t…

  • Independent Research on Tobacco Control in Germany

    Alexander Krämer•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•2006•References: 2

In their article, “Tobacco Industry Influence on Science and Scientists in Germany,” Gruning et al.1 described the various methods by which the tobacco industry distorts science: (1) suppression of unfavorable research results, (2) dilution through selective funding of research and recruitment of scientists, (3) distraction of the attention from smoking as a cause of tobacco-related diseases, (4) concealment of the relationships between scientist…
