  • Revisiting the syntax and interpretation of Vietnamese được

    A Simpson, Linh Pham•CHAPTER•Linguistik Aktuell/Linguistics…•2026

The syntactic analysis of the element được in Vietnamese presents an interesting puzzle due to được ’s odd position and varied contribution to interpretation. In many occurrences, được has the interpretation of a modal verb, but is regularly positioned following the main verb, rather than preceding it, unlike other TAM elements in head-initial Vietnamese. In other instances, được may appear to have an aspectual interpretation. This chapter argues…

  • New Insights into Theoretical Syntax from Asian Languages

    A Simpson•EDITOR•BOOK•Linguistik Aktuell/Linguistics…•2026

This book brings together some of the most prominent linguists working in the field of East and Southeast Asian syntax to create a special collection of papers which highlight new developments in the analysis of the syntax of Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Vietnamese and other Southeast Asian languages. Generative syntactic theory has regularly been influenced by discoveries made in Asian languages, and the present volume connects a broad range of st…

  • A digital mindfulness application for African American caregivers of people living with HIV/Aids

    Open Access•K Alexander, S B Carswell et al.•ARTICLE•AIDS Care•2026

As people living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA) live longer, they increasingly rely on informal caregivers. African American caregivers of PLWHA may face elevated risk for stress-related health problems from caregiving demands, HIV-related stigma, racial discrimination, and limited access to culturally responsive services. Mindfulness-based interventions can reduce caregiver stress, but in-person delivery may not be feasible. This study evaluated the feas…

  • Specificity contrasts in Lalo Yi

    Open Access•Yaqing Hu, A Simpson•ARTICLE•Studies in Language•2025

Lalo Yi (Tibeto-Burman; China) makes systematic distinctions in the encoding of specificity with numerically-quantified nominals. Whereas specific indefinite NPs involve the presence of an article nikhe in an NP-internal position [Noun nikhe Numeral Classifier], non-specific existentially-asserted indefinites require the use of a syntactically discontinuous floating quantifier pattern [NP...Numeral-Classifier...]. A third, distinctive patterning …

  • The Syntax of Null Possessors with Kinship Terms and Body Part Nouns in Vietnamese

    Open Access•A Simpson, Linh Pham•ARTICLE•Languages•2025•References: 14

Bare nouns representing kinship terms (KNs) and body parts (BPNs) can be assumed to project a null possessor argument, which allows for the interpretation of such nouns relative to other linguistically present NPs. In Vietnamese, the distribution of KNs and BPNs is subject to different locality conditions and leads to the analysis of null possessors with KNs as covert anaphors, while null possessors with BPNs are null pronominals (pro). This cont…

  • An Argument for Non‐agree‐driven Movement

    Open Access•Saurov Syed, A Simpson•ARTICLE•Studia Linguistica•2024

This paper argues for the occurrence of movement that is not the by‐product of an Agree relation in which a probe searches for a goal. The hypothesis that not all instances of movement might be feature‐driven was entertained in early Minimalism, but it has nevertheless become widely assumed that all instances of syntactic movement should be attributed to the operation of Agree. Here, using complex patterns of DP‐internal movement in Bangla, we ar…

  • Thermographic Detection of Hidden Archaeological Features in a Cheshire Thatched Cottage, and Related Aspects of Thermal Performance

Open Access•A Simpson, Michael Nevell•ARTICLE•The Historic Environment Policy &…•2022

Thermography can be an important tool for professionals working with traditional buildings. It is recognised by Historic England as providing information on a variety of structural features within buildings. Infrared thermography (IRT) is an acknowledged retrofit tool for reducing carbon emissions from traditional buildings. The paper explores the potential application of thermography as a tool for detecting infrared images emitted by the interna…
