The New York Policy on Smoking in Addiction Treatment
Objectives. We assessed changes in smoking prevalence and other measures associated with the July 2008 New York Office of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Services tobacco policy, which required that all publicly funded addiction treatment programs implement smoke-free grounds, have “no evidence” of smoking among staff, and make tobacco dependence treatment available for all clients. Methods. In a random sample of 10 programs, staff and clients wer…
Has alcohol been proven to be protective against coronary heart disease
Moderate alcohol use and reduced mortality risk
The majority of prospective studies on alcohol use and mortality risk indicates that abstainers are at increased risk of mortality from both all causes and coronary heart disease (CHD). This meta-analysis of 54 published studies tested the extent to which a systematic misclassification error was committed by including as ‘abstainers’ many people who had reduced or stopped drinking, a phenomenon associated with ageing and ill health. The studies j…
Smoke without Fire
This paper draws from a rich longitudinal California data set to analyze the scope and nature of nursing home closures between 1997 and 2001, and to present a Cox proportionate hazards model of the risks of closure that arise from a range of facility and market characteristics. When compared with the sample total of 1,482 facilities operating in the baseline year of 1997, only 56 facilities closed through 2001, involving the loss of 3.8% of facil…
Effects of Losing SSI Benefits on Standard Drug and Alcohol Outcome Measures
P.L. 104–121 eliminated drug addiction and alcoholism (DA&A) as an impairment category for Supplemental Security Income (SSI), allowing a six-month period for DA&A recipients to request an eligibility redetermination, and terminating all SSI DA&A benefits on January 1, 1997, In a multi-site cohort study of persons affected by this change, participants were interviewed prior to the benefits termination date and reinterviewed over a two-year follow…
Leadership, Cohesion, and Team Norms Regarding Cheating and Aggression
The present study drew from the model of moral action proposed by Shields and Bredemeier (1995) according to which a sport team’s collective norms influence behavior. The focus was on team cheating and aggression norms in relation to demographic variables, leadership style, and team cohesion. Participants were baseball and softball players ( N =298) at the high school and community college level. It was found that age, year in school, and years p…
