Potential Global Effects of the Rise of the Far Right on Public Health
The influence of the far right is growing globally. This calls for a critical examination of its potential public health implications. Characterized by authoritarianism, injustice, racism, misogyny, homophobia, transphobia, divisive rhetoric, and a propensity for violence, the far right often employs denialist arguments against scientific evidence, including opposition to environmental protection policies. We conducted a narrative review of exist…
Adequacy of telework spaces in homes during the lockdown in Madrid, according to socioeconomic factors and home features
In Spain, the COVID-19 confinement was carried out in the spring of 2020. All non-essential activities were temporarily suspended. This brought with it the adaptation to home office (telework), still emerging in Europe, and more in Spain. Although the response in general has been positive, the conditions to which families have been subjected to telework cannot be considered normal. In this context, an online survey was requested to find out the e…
Discourses on the postcoital pill in young women
The results of this study have public health implications: The sexual-affective health education received by young people should incorporate clear information about the mechanism of action of the EC pill and its side effects together with empowerment strategies addressing guilt and moralistic messages. Programmes and training activities for health professionals must be designed to prevent the communication of inappropriate messages such as those …
Beyond the consultation room
BACKGROUND: Primary health care (PHC) is the ideal setting to provide integrated services centred on the person and to implement health promotion (HP) activities. OBJECTIVE: To identify proposals to approach HP in the context of primary care according to health-care users aged 45-75 years, key community informants and primary care centre (PCC) workers. METHODS: Descriptive-interpretive qualitative research with 276 participants from 14 PCC of sev…
Health-care users, key community informants and primary health care workers’ views on health, health promotion, health assets and deficits
Generally, participants showed a holistic and positive concept of health and a more traditional, individual approach to health promotion. We consider therefore crucial to depart from the model of health services that focuses on the individual and the disease toward a socio-ecological health model that substantially increases the participation of health-care users and emphasizes health promotion, wellbeing and community participation
Psychosocial and sociodemographic predictors of attrition in a longitudinal study of major depression in primary care
BACKGROUND: Few data exist on the psychosocial factors associated with attrition in longitudinal surveys. This study was undertaken to determine psychosocial and sociodemographic predictors of attrition from a longitudinal study of the onset and persistence of episodes of major depression in primary care. METHODS: A systematic random sample of general practice attendees was recruited in seven Spanish provinces between October 2005 and February 20…
Predicting the onset and persistence of episodes of depression in primary health care. The predictD-Spain study
The items and questionnaires were reliable and data quality control was excellent. When we eventually obtain our risk index for the onset and persistence of depression, we will be able to determine the individual risk of each patient evaluated in primary health care
