Implementing a Community Engagement Model to Develop a Community-Driven Oral Health Intervention
Community partnerships can be leveraged to develop oral health programs that fit specific community needs and provide resources to families at greatest risk for child dental caries. Community engagement can be used to modify the intervention to meet oral health needs of other vulnerable communities
Mother’s Experience of Conflict Within Their Family Social Network when Advocating for Children’s oral Health
Race and payor type for child visits with public health dental hygienist practitioners
PHDHPs co-located at a pediatric hospital clinic saw a high proportion of visits from children of non-white race and with public insurance. Visits from children of minority race and with public insurance increased disproportionately as visit volume grew from 2013 to 2017, depicting a vehicle through which historically underserved children increasingly accessed preventive dental services
Advancing oral health policy through persuasive messaging and effective research measures
Oral health is often excluded from broad health policy discussions, addressed only in a policy silo. There is a paucity of research to guide policymaking as it relates to oral health. In response, AcademyHealth's Oral Health Interest Group organized a meeting during the 2019 AcademyHealth Annual Research Meeting to promote transdisciplinary dialog on the current state of oral health policy and the steps necessary to improve the oral health of Ame…
Success rates of pediatric dental referrals made by public health dental hygiene practitioners
PHDHPs were more successful referring children older than 3 years old and those with dental caries to pediatric dentists. PHDHPs are allied dental health professionals that can be effective at referring children to pediatric dentists when they have dental caries. Additional strategies are needed to enhance the success rate of dental referrals for young children under 3 years old
Use of the consolidated framework for implementation research to assess determinants of silver diamine fluoride implementation in safety net dental clinics
The determinants of SDF protocol implementation identified in this study will be useful to guide future efforts to implement the SDF protocol
Absence of a moderating effect of parent health literacy on Early Head Start enrollment and dental use
Parents in EHS had a higher prevalence of low HL compared to non-EHS parents. Parents' HL did not moderate the relationship between EHS and child dental use, suggesting that EHS results in similar improvements in dental use regardless of parent's HL levels
Enrollment in early head start and oral health-related quality of life
Impact of Early Head Start in North Carolina on Dental Care Use Among Children Younger Than 3 Years
Objectives. To examine the effects of North Carolina Early Head Start (EHS), an early education program for low-income children younger than 3 years and their families, on dental care use among children. Methods. We performed a quasi-experimental study in which we interviewed 479 EHS and 699 non-EHS parent–child dyads at baseline (2010–2012) and at a 24-month follow-up (2012–2014). We estimated the effects of EHS participation on the probability …
Propensity score weighting
Although propensity scores derived from GBM and LRM both effectively balanced observed preintervention covariates, GBM resulted in better covariate balance compared with LRM. GBM also resulted in a larger effective sample size of the control group compared with LRM. Propensity score weighting using GBM is an effective statistical method to reduce confounding due to imbalanced distributions of measured preintervention covariates in this EHS interv…
