Structural and social determinants of inequities in violence risk
There is disproportionate risk for violence conditioned on inequities due to race, socioeconomic status, gender, and where people live. Consequently, some communities are more vulnerable to violence and its repercussions than other communities. This study aims to share indicators that might be useful for violence prevention researchers interested in measuring structural or social determinants that position communities for differential risk of exp…
Societal determinants of violent death
In this ecological study, we attempt to quantify the extent to which differences in homicide and suicide death rates between three countries, and among states/provinces within those countries, may be explained by differences in their social, economic, and structural characteristics. We examine the relationship between state/province level measures of societal risk factors and state/province level rates of violent death (homicide and suicide) acro…
Enhancing the National Dialogue on the Prevention of Intimate Partner Violence
Little systematic information exists about how community‐based prevention efforts at the state and local levels contribute to our knowledge of intimate partner violence ( IPV ) prevention. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's ( CDC ) D ELTA FOCUS program funds ten state domestic violence coalitions to engage in IPV primary prevention through approaches addressing the outer layers of the social ecology. This paper explored the ways in …
The Influence of Participation, Gender and Organizational Sense of Community on Psychological Empowerment
This study explored the influence of participation, gender and organizational sense of community (SOC) on both the intrapersonal and interactional components of psychological empowerment (PE). Participants were residents (n = 562) involved in community organizing efforts in five U.S. communities. Measures of participation and SOC were tailored to community organization contexts. SOC assessed three dimensions: (1) connection of members to the orga…
Tobacco sales in community pharmacies
This study applied multilevel modeling procedures with data from 678 community pharmacies and 382 residential census tracts in a Midwestern U.S. state to determine if two sets of variables: retail type (e.g., remotely owned, independently owned) and population demographics of the tracts in which outlets were located were associated with retail tobacco availability in community pharmacies. Data were derived from three archival sources: listings of…
Community organizations and sense of community
The Community Organization Sense of Community Scale (COSOC) is a frequently used or cited measure of the construct in community psychology and other disciplines, despite a lack of confirmation of its underlying 4‐factor framework. Two studies were conducted to test the hypothesized structure of the COSOC, the potential effects of method bias on psychometric properties, and whether a revised measure (COSOC‐R) yielded improved model‐to‐data fit. St…
Community organizational learning
We present a three‐dimensional cube framework to help community organizational researchers and administrators think about an organization's learning and empowerment‐related structures and processes in terms of firstorder (incremental or ameliorative) and second‐order (transformative) change at the individual, organizational, and community levels. To illustrate application of the framework, case studies of three different types of exemplary nonpro…
