  • Acquaintance, Coach, or Buddy

    Open Access•Sumin Fang, Linda Aldoory•ARTICLE•Communication Studies•2021

Chinese women are among the most frequent users of fitness technology, and yet the least likely to adhere to a fitness regimen. Little research has been done on preference, use, and perceptions of mobile health tools. Research, however, has shown that women’s adherence to fitness technology has been low, and that relationship management theory might hold a key to understanding how perceived relationships might increase adherence to exercise regim…

  • ‘Health literacy for all’

Sarah A Aghazadeh, Linda Aldoory•ARTICLE•Journal of Applied Communication…•2020

Roughly one in five U.S. children live in rural areas and they are more likely than nonrural children to experience chronic illnesses, unfulfilled medical needs, and poverty – yet health literacy intervention research for rural children is lacking. Thus, this study explores a health literacy intervention in two rural public elementary schools that have very different socioeconomic levels, educational achievement rates, and initial health literacy…

  • Integrating Health Literacy Into Core Curriculum

Open Access•Sarah A Aghazadeh, Linda Aldoory et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of School Health•2020

BACKGROUND: Limited research has addressed the effects of health literacy interventions in elementary schools. The purpose of the pilot project was to explore the feasibility of integrated health literacy lesson plans for second graders. METHODS: A pretest-posttest evaluation was conducted with second grade students following …

  • Assessing health literacy and oral health

    Open Access•Mark D Macek, K A Atchison et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Public Health Dentistry•2016

Our analysis showed that dental school patients exhibit a range of health literacy abilities. It also revealed that the relationship between health literacy and oral health is not straightforward, depending on patient characteristics and the unique circumstances of the encounter. We anticipate future analyses of MOHLRS data will answer questions about the role that health literacy and various mediating factors play in explaining oral health dispa…

  • Health, Culture, and Power

    Open Access•Linda Aldoory•CHAPTER•2012

Only limited research has been published about women as an audience of health messages in the media. Furthermore, most of the well‐known health communication theories have not effectively addressed the sociocultural and political environments that construct the medical/health industry and the media, which impact the everyday lives of women and their decision‐making in the area of health. This chapter offers a comprehensive overview of the researc…

  • The Rise and Fall of Hot-Issue Publics

    Linda Aldoory, James E Grunig•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2012•Cited by: 7•References: 2

Research over the years using Grunig's situational theory has identified hot-issue publics along with active, aware, latent, and nonpublics. Hot-issue publics typically communicate actively only about a single problem that involves nearly everyone in the population and that has received extensive media coverage. Hot-issue publics tend to emerge when a triggering event occurs, such as an accident, crisis, or media controversy. Hot-issue publics, h…

  • A (Re)Conceived Feminist Paradigm for Public Relations

    Open Access•Linda Aldoory•ARTICLE•Journal of Communication•2005

This article advances a feminist paradigm for public relations scholarship by (re)conceptualizing the concepts of gender, power, and diversity as discursive practices that construct the meaning of public relations. These three concepts are then applied to the body of work on organization-public relationships. The article posits that the current feminist paradigm retains androcentric bias. By transforming the way that the paradigm is practiced, ge…

  • The Empowerment of Feminist Scholarship in Public Relations and the Building of a Feminist Paradigm

    Linda Aldoory•ARTICLE•Annals of the International…•2003•References: 33

The impact of feminist scholarship on public relations affects practitioners, scholars, and audiences alike. Since the first comprehensive gender study in public relations was published in 1986, numerous scholars have (a) described the status of women in the profession, (b) applied feminist perspectives to prevailing public relations theories, and (c) explored new feminized concepts and theories. Taken as a whole, this scholarship has led to a ne…
