This study investigates the co-occurrence of intimate partner violence (IPV) against mothers and their risk of perpetrating child maltreatment (CM) in North Macedonia, the Republic of Moldova, and Romania. Risk factors for IPV, CM, and their co-occurrence were identified. Two samples ( N 1 = 112, N 2 = 701) of mothers with children with behavioral problems were assessed. IPV was reported by 64% of mothers, CM by 96%, and their co-occurrence by 63…

  • Preventing child mental health problems in southeastern Europe

Open Access•Elena Jansen, Inga Frantz et al.•ARTICLE•Family Process•2022

The prevalence of child emotional and behavioral problems is an international problem but is higher in low‐ and middle‐income countries (LMIC) where there are often less mental health supports for families. Parenting programs can be an effective means of prevention, but must be low‐cost, scalable, and suitable for the local context. The RISE project aims to systematically adapt, implement, and evaluate a low‐cost parenting program for preventing/…

  • The Science of Scale for Violence Prevention

    Open Access•Y Shenderovich, J M Lachman et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Public Health•2021

Ending all violence against children by 2030 is a core part of Sustainable Development Goals 5 and 16. A number of promising violence reduction strategies have been identified in research studies. However, we lack an understanding of the implementation and impact of these programs in respect to their delivery at a large scale or within existing service systems, particularly in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). We advocate for greater coll…

The study's aim was to develop a multidimensional model for the assessment of child maltreatment prevention readiness in low- and middle-income countries. The model was developed based on a conceptual review of relevant existing models and approaches, an international expert consultation, and focus groups in six countries. The final model comprises 10 dimensions: key country conditions; problem assessment; legislation, mandates, policies, and pla…
