  • Cross-Validation of Differences Between Users and Non-Users of Senior Centers

Robert J Calsyn, Gary K Burger et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Social Service Research•1996•Cited by: 1•References: 4

Discriminant analysis was used to compare users and non-users of senior centers in two samples of older adults. The model accurately classified 70-80% of the two samples. This was the first study to cross-validate findings both within and between samples. Included in the model were variables from four domains; predisposing, enabling, need, and linkage to the older adult service system. Variables measuring linkage to the service system explained m…

  • The Women's Studies Experience

    Open Access•Jayne E Stake, Laurie A Roades et al.•ARTICLE•Psychology of Women Quarterly•1994•Cited by: 13•References: 2

The impact of women's studies courses on students' feminist activism and related behaviors was assessed through quantitative and qualitative methods. At pretesting, women's studies students (10 classes: 161 women and 18 men) did not report significantly more activism than nonwomen's studies students taught by women's studies faculty (9 classes: 73 women and 48 men) or nonwomen's studies students taught by nonwomen's studies faculty (12 classes: 1…

Predictor variables measuring lack of human capital were education and income. Social alienation predictors included prior homelessness, marital status, and childhood placement. Psychiatric predictors included prior hospitalization and level of functioning. Age, race, gender, and military veteran sta…

  • Stress, social support, and morale

    Open Access•Robert J Calsyn, Laurie A Roades•ARTICLE•Journal of Community Psychology•1991•References: 8

The present study tested the following hypotheses: (1) Stress has more of a negative impact on the life satisfaction of those under age 75 than those over age 75; (2) social support has more of a positive effect on life satisfaction in those under age 75 than those over age 75; (3) the buffering effect of social support is stronger in the under age 75 group than the over age 75 group. None of the three hypotheses was supported, contrary to prior …

  • Feminism and Women's Friendships

Open Access•Steven Rose, Suzanna Rose et al.•ARTICLE•Psychology of Women Quarterly•1987•Cited by: 3•References: 11

The ideology of “sisterhood” within the feminist movement suggests that feminists' and nonfeminists' same-sex friendships would differ profoundly. This assumption was tested by examining the friendships of 45 heterosexual nonfeminists, 43 heterosexual feminists, and 38 lesbian feminists from a large midwestern city. Participants ranged in age from 19 to 46. Using objective measures, differences were found between feminists and nonfeminists for so…
