Impact and Implementation of an Early Years Fundamental Motor Skills Intervention for Children 4–5 Years
This evaluation provided important insights into the effectiveness and implementation of the Early Years FMS intervention to improve FMS competencies in children aged 4-5 years
A randomized evaluation of 15 versus 25 weeks of individual tutoring for children in care
Security-first thinking and educational practices for young children in foster care in Sweden and England: A think piece
Foster and adoptive parent training: A process and outcome investigation of the preservice PRIDE program
Overview of out of home care in the USA and Canada
The paper begins by suggesting that child welfare systems in North America and selected European and Scandinavian countries have converged functionally over the last two decades from a focus on child protection or family service to a more comprehensive child development orientation. The overview of the US in-care system covers the topics of mandatory reporting of child maltreatment, permanency planning, foster care funding, and decentralized serv…
Deliberation over new hydrogen energy technologies: Evidence from two Citizens’ Panels in the UK
Hydrogen energy and hydrogen energy technologies are still largely at the experimental and demonstration project stages. If the hydrogen is produced sustainably from renewable sources, it may be a potential means of reducing carbon dioxide emissions and achieving other environmental objectives. But hydrogen technologies are still ‘emergent’ – seeking a niche to compete against incumbent technologies in stationary and mobile applications. Hydrogen…
Social Role Valorization in Community Mental Health Housing: Does It Contribute to the Community Integration and Life Satisfaction of People With Psychiatric Disabilities
Despite its importance as a theory in the development of programs for populations with disabilities, social role valorization (SRV) has received relatively little attention in community mental health research. We present findings of a study that examined the relationship of housing‐related SRV to community integration and global life satisfaction of persons with psychiatric disabilities. The housing environments and associated supports of a group…
Placement, protective and risk factors in the educational success of young people in care: Cross-sectional and longitudinal analyses
In the present study, we formulated and tested a basic model of the educational success of young people in out-of-home care. We used data from 2007 to 2008 and 2008 to 2009 on a sample of 1106 young people in care in Ontario, Canada. The youths were 12–17 years of age; 56.24% were male and 43.76% female. The indicators of educational success in both years were the youth's average marks and the youth's school performance in reading, math, science …
Effects of individual direct-instruction tutoring on foster children's academic skills: A randomized trial
Improving the educational achievement of young people in out-of-home care
Ambiguity, complexity and uncertainty surrounding the hazards of hydrogen and public views of emergent risks
New technologies and emergent risks pose special problems for risk governance \nand regulation. This paper outlines some of the uncertainties about the hazards \nof hydrogen energy and examines qualitative evidence from recent deliberative \nCitizens’ Panels in England and Wales about hydrogen energy technologies. It \nis shown that laypeople express ambivalent and contradictory views about, and \ncritical trust in, experts’ views about hydrogen.…
Promotive and risk factors as concurrent predictors of educational outcomes in supported transitional living: Extended care and maintenance in Ontario, Canada
Developmental and cultural assets and resilient outcomes in First Nations young people in care: An initial test of an explanatory model
Foster-parent training and foster-child outcomes: An exploratory cross-sectional analysis
Very little research has been conducted on the effects of foster-parent training. This study used cross-sectional data from a larger outcome-monitoring project to describe the training received by foster (including kinship) parents in Ontario, Canada, and explore the possible links between such training and selected foster-child outcomes. The sample comprised 603 foster children, aged 10–17 years, and their foster (93%) or kinship parents (7%). T…
The SDQ as a mental health measurement tool in a Canadian sample of looked-after young people
The Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ) is used increasingly internationally in child welfare as a tool for mental-health screening, referral and outcome measurement. This study compared the SDQ scores, based on ratings by foster parents or other caregivers, of 492 young people aged 11–15 years and living in out-of-home care in Ontario, Canada, with normative SDQ scores, based on parental ratings, of a large sample of young people aged…
Training and Experience: Keys to Enhancing the Utility for Foster Parents of the Assessment and Action Record from Looking after Children
The Looking After Children (LAC) approach is now widely used internationally in child welfare. The approach, which originated almost two decades ago, aims systematically to raise the standard of corporate parenting and improve the outcome of young people in out-of-home care. The Assessment and Action Record (AAR) from LAC is used to monitor young people's developmental progress on a year-to-year basis. Clearly, foster carers are central to the su…
Factors favoring psychological resilience among fostered young people
Use of population measures and norms to identify resilient outcomes in young people in care: An exploratory study
The purposes of this study were to derive a new method for identifying resilience (i.e. positive adaptation in spite of serious adversity) among young people in care and to determine the percentage of the latter who experienced resilience on selected outcomes, as conceptualized from within the developmental approach of Looking After Children. The participants comprised two samples of young people who were living in out‐of‐home care (mainly foster…
Validation d’une version française du Outcome Questionnaire et évaluation d’un service de counselling en milieu clinique
The first purpose of this study was to assess the psychometric quality and validity of the Mesure d’Impact-45 (MI-45) and the Mesure d’Impact-22 (MI-22), French translations of 45-item and 22-item versions, respectively, of the Outcome Questionnaire. The second purpose was to evaluate, by means of the MI-22, a French-language counselling program located in a clinical setting in Quebec, which provided additional information on the sensitivity to c…
A Quarter-Century of Normalization and Social Role Valorization: Evolution and Impact
During the late 1960s, Normalization and Social Role Valorization (SRV) enabled the widespread emergence of community residential options and then provided the philosophical climate within which educational integration, supported employment, and community participation were able to take firm root. This book is unique in tracing the evolution and impact of Normalization and SRV over the last quarter-century, with many of the chapter authors person…

Comparing developmental outcomes for children in care with those for other children in Canada
This study assessed the test–retest reliability and convergent validity of single items from the Assessment and Action Record (AAR), from Looking After Children (Ward, 1995). It also compared developmental outcomes of 43 children cared for by a Canadian child welfare agency and those of an approximate comparison group of 1,600 children from the National Longitudinal Survey of Children and Youth (Statistics Canada, 1995). High and low reliability …

Facilitating Instrumental Utilization for Policy Development in a Multisite, Interministerially Sponsored Human Service Program
This article focuses on the instrumental utilization of evaluation findings to assist in the development of program policy, including a brief review of some of the literature in this area. The context from which examples are drawn is an innovative human service program/policy that involves multiple funding ministries and participating agencies. A number of instances of the instrumental utilization of findings from an evaluation of multisite polic…
