  • Navigating distrust and competing priorities during the Covid-19 pandemic

Open Access•Rachel Waldman, Rachel N Waldman et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Public Health•2025

Introduction: Stopping an infectious disease outbreak relies on a coordinated set of actions across public and private institutions and the wider public. However, cooperation with public health recommendations was notably hindered during the pandemic by widespread distrust in science and government and the notion that public health competed with other priorities. This study aims to examine the factors driving distrust and competing priorities in …

  • Haitian and Haitian American experiences of racism and socioethnic discrimination in Miami‐Dade county

Open Access•Toni Cela, Louis Herns Marcelin et al.•ARTICLE•Family Process•2023

We examine how juvenile justice‐involved youth of Haitian descent in Miami‐Dade County cope with structural racism and its impact on their mental health. Drawing on longitudinal ethnography, psychosocial assessment data, and a family‐based clinical intervention funded by the National Institute on Drug Abuse, this article explores youth narratives of discrimination prior to and during the COVID‐19 pandemic. We use critical race theory and theory o…

Open Access•Roberto Posada, Rachel Waldman et al.•ARTICLE•AIDS Care•2023

Adolescents living with HIV (ALWH) are particularly susceptible to disruptions in care, which may lead to poor HIV-related health outcomes. Here, we report the results of a longitudinal phone-based study investigating impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on ALWH in New York City. Participants (N = 10, mean age 21.2 years, 50% female) demonstrated substantial COVID-19 knowledge and identified Instagram as their primary source of COVID-19 information. …

Open Access•Abhishek Jaywant, Leah Mautner et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2023

Executive dysfunction after stroke is associated with limitations in daily activities and disability. Existing interventions for executive dysfunction show inconsistent transfer to everyday activities and require frequent clinic visits that can be difficult for patients with chronic mobility challenges to access. To address this barrier, we developed a telehealth-based executive function intervention that combines computerized cognitive training …

  • We Get by With a Little Help From Our Peers

    Jordyn H Feingold, Carly A Kaplan et al.•ARTICLE•Academic Medicine•2022

PROBLEM: Physician distress is a growing national problem that begins in medical school. Solutions that teach well-being concepts and coping skills during medical school and throughout medical training are needed. APPROACH: The Practice Enhancement, Engagement, Resilience, and Support (PEERS) program was designed at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai (ISMMS) in 2017 as a longitudinal program for medical students to process challenges and…

Open Access•Toni Cela, Danna Demezier et al.•ARTICLE•Family Relations•2022

  • Remote delivery of a therapeutic intervention to court‐mandated youths of Haitian descent during Covid‐19

Open Access•Louis Herns Marcelin, Toni Cela et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Community Psychology•2021•Cited by: 1•References: 28

The threat generated by the COVID‐19 pandemic has triggered sudden institutional changes in an effort to reduce viral spread. Restrictions on group gatherings and in‐person engagement have increased the demand for remote service delivery. These restrictions have also affected the delivery of court‐mandated interventions. However, much of the literature has focused on populations that voluntarily seek out face‐to‐face medical care or mental health…
