Towards an Orthodox Understanding of Religious Freedom: An Exploration of the Theological Resources for Engaging Religious Pluralism
Orthodox Christian churches face a great challenge in integrating into today’s world: religious pluralism. According to Fr. Emmanuel Clapsis of Holy Cross Greek Orthodox School of Theology, “understanding what it means to be the Church of God in a pluralistic society” is “one of the greatest problems the Orthodox churches face in the modern world.” Clapsis asks, “[O]nce the churches affirm that the Church exists not only for its members but for t…

However, by examining the liturgical, patristic, and modern commentary on economics, we can glean what an Eastern Orthodox theology of economics might look like. In this chapter we will observe what the worship services of the church, the fathers of the church, and some contemporary Orthodox thinkers have said about the economic question. Much of the commentary pertain…
The Visit of Patriarch Kirill to Ukraine in 2009 and its Significance in Ukraine's Political and Religious Life
In July 2009 Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and all Rus' paid a visit to Ukraine with ostensibly spiritual concerns to celebrate the anniversary of the baptism of St Vladimir and Rus' and the 450th anniversary of the gift of the Pochaiv icon of the Mother of God. In this article we argue that the visit was, however, of more than just pastoral significance: it served both symbolically and realistically as a means to shore up the relationship between t…

Nationalism and the Local Church: The Source of Ecclesiastical Conflict in the Orthodox Commonwealth
Much of the social science literature pertaining to the development of civil society in post-communist Eastern Europe focuses on the issue of religious pluralism, especially the relationship of religious minorities and new religious movements (NRMs) to the state and their established Orthodox churches. Their findings suggest that the equation of ethno-religious nationalism, cultural identity, and the state becomes a hindrance to religious plurali…
