From mathematics and science to classroom management
Introduction Teaching confidence is a critical determinant of instructional quality, teacher attitudes, and student outcomes, particularly in inclusive and special education contexts. This study validated a multidimensional Teaching Confidence Scale for primary special education teachers, encompassing Mathematics/Science Instruction, Instructional Innovation, and Classroom Management. Methods Using an Item Response Theory (IRT) framework, we exam…
Assessing Causal Links Between Mathematics Teaching Efficacy, Attitudes Towards Inclusion, and Efficacy in Implementing Inclusive Practices
Previous research has documented that mathematics teaching efficacy, attitudes towards inclusion, and efficacy in implementing inclusive practices are interrelated through reciprocal relationships. Nowadays, the need for enhancing inclusive mathematics education and supporting teachers in diverse classrooms is insatiable. In this study, we evaluated these dynamic relationships through the use of a cross-lagged panel autoregressive model. The samp…
An exploratory statistical cusp catastrophe model for the prediction of the effect of special education teachers’ emotional intelligence on their burnout
In the present research, the relationship between emotional intelligence and burnout was investigated in a sample of Greek special education teachers. The cusp catastrophe model was used for the statistical analysis. Based on the analysis, emotional intelligence was negatively correlated with burnout. Surprisingly, this negative relationship was reversed when the increase in the level of emotional intelligence exceeded a certain point. There seem…
Examining the Relationships Among Burnout, Mathematics Self-Efficacy, Anxiety, and Mathematical Competence in Primary and Secondary Students with Dyscalculia
Dyscalculia is a learning disability in mathematics frequently accompanied by cognitive, emotional, and motivational challenges. However, the combined contribution of these factors to mathematical competence remains insufficiently understood. This cross-sectional study examined the relationships among cognitive abilities, mathematics self-efficacy, anxiety, burnout, and mathematical competence in a sample of 64 students with dyscalculia aged 10–1…
Representations of disability from the perspective of people with disabilities and their families
Contrary to the growing body of research into views about and attitudes towards disability which has focused on the perspectives of non-disabled people, recent disability studies have been directed to the voices of people with disabilities and/or their families, by acknowledging an ‘epistemic privilege’ to them. In the present study, we use the posts of sensory and physical disability groups on Facebook as a lens to uncover the voices and experie…
A comparative study of representations about disability in primary school children's drawings
Over the past few years, perceptions about disability – at least at the theoretical level – have been shifted toward a more progressive approach, which stresses the social aspects of the construction of disability (social model) rather than personal limitations, as supported by the traditional disability approach (medical–individual model). Drawing upon the sociosemiotic approach as developed by Kress and van Leeuwen, the present study examines f…
Representations of Disability in Greek School Newspapers
In a school newspaper children act as reporters, as editors and designers simultaneously. Their texts – linguistic and visual – highlight and manifest what they think is important to be published. Apart from that, the images that have been chosen, they convey signifieds/symbols/signs. This study searches the representations of disability in Greek school newspapers in order to reveal the necessity of this information in a school medium of communic…
