  • Modelling German Word Stress

Open Access•Fabian Tomaschek, Ulrike Domahs et al.•ARTICLE•Glossa a journal of general…•2023

Standard linguistic and psycholinguistic approaches to stress assignment argue that the position of word stress is determined on the basis of abstract information such as syllable weight and number of syllables in the word. In the present study, we contrasted this approach with a perspective based on learning analogies according to which speakers learn to associate basic word form cues to stress position. To do so, we use a simple two-layer neura…

  • The plural counts

Open Access•Maciej Haman, Katarzyna Lipowska et al.•ARTICLE•Cognition•2023

The role of grammar in numerical development, and particularly the role of grammatical number inflection, has already been well-documented in toddlerhood. It is unclear, however, whether the influence of grammatical language structure further extends to more complex later stages of numerical development. Here, we addressed this question by exploiting differences between Polish, which has a complex grammatical number paradigm, leading to a partial…

  • Why do He and She Disagree

    Open Access•Margret Seyboth, Frank Domahs•ARTICLE•Journal of Psycholinguistic…•2023•Cited by: 1•References: 18

In many languages, grammatical gender is an inherent property of nouns and, as such, forms a basis for agreement relations between nouns and their dependent elements (e.g., adjectives, determiners). Mental gender representation is traditionally assumed to be categorial, with categorial gender nodes corresponding to the given gender specifications in a certain language (e.g., [masculine], [feminine], [neuter] in German). In alternative models, ins…

  • The Role of Sensory Perception, Emotionality and Lifeworld in Auditory Word Processing

  • Structural Factors Affecting the Assignment of Word Stress in German

Open Access•Timo B Röttger, Ulrike Domahs et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Germanic Linguistics•2012

This paper aims to shed light on regularities underlying German stress assignment. The results of a pseudoword production task suggest that rhyme complexity of the final syllable is a strong predictor of main stress position in German. We also found that antepenult rhyme complexity and orthographic rhyme structure have significant effect on stress assignment. In general, the effects seem to be probabilistic rather than categorical. Our results su…
