The Effects of the Literal Meaning of Emotional Phrases on the Identification of Vocal Emotions
Influence of vowel context on the audio‐visual speech perception of voiced stop consonants
The work reported here investigated whether the extent of McGurk effect differs according to the vowel context, and differs when cross‐modal vowels are matched or mismatched in Japanese. Two audio‐visual experiments were conducted to examine the process of audio‐visual phonetic‐feature extraction and integration. The first experiment was designed to compare the extent of the McGurk effect in Japanese in three different vowel contexts. The results…
The auditory tau and kappa effects for voiced stop consonants
Two experiments were carried out, using the voiced stop consonants /b/ and /d/, in order to investigate the auditory tau effect (Experiment 1) and the kappa effect (Experiment 2). Nine undergraduate students participated as subjects in Experiment 1 and seven in Experiment 2. As the results, the auditory tau and kappa effects were observed in the phonetic judgment of voiced stop consonants. The effects were observed more clearly for the /be/-/de/ …
Localization of speech and non-speech sounds
The localization of speech and non-speech sounds in the horizontal plane was investigated. Four kinds of stimulus sounds were employed: synthetic vowel, pure tone, white noise, and single resonance tone. The experiment was carried out under two presentation conditions: single-tone and two-successive-tone conditions. The results indicated that the percentage of correct responses for white noise was greater than that for synthetic vowels under all …
Effect of a Preceding Anchor Upon the Categorical Judgment of Speech and Non-Speech Stimuli
The anchoring effect in auditory perception was investigated. Three experiments were carried out in order to examine the effects of the relative position between anchor and stimulus set on the stimulus continuum as well as on the time axis. Furthermore, the influence of stimulus attributes and complexities was investigated using pure tones, single resonance tones with formant structure, and synthetic vowels. The results indicated that the shift o…
