  • Green and black

Open Access•Huilan Yang, Dandi Li et al.•ARTICLE•Humanities and Social Sciences…•2025

This study aims to examine the impact of background colors on pro-environmental behavior surveys in both Chinese and English. A total of 146 unbalanced bilingual undergraduate students (individuals with higher proficiency in Chinese, L1, than in English, L2) in China were randomly assigned to either the green or black background versions of the survey. Prior to the survey, an Implicit Association Test (IAT) was administered to another group of 46…

  • Color Metaphor Mappings for Love Concepts

Open Access•Huilan Yang, Beibei Huang et al.•ARTICLE•Metaphor and Symbol•2025

Conceptual metaphors crucially shape how people understand and represent abstract concepts like love. Numerous Chinese linguistic metaphors associate love (beginning/continuing a romantic relationship) with red (e.g. 红豆相思) and lovelorn (breakup/end of a romantic relationship) with gray (e.g. 万念俱灰). However, empirical evidence supporting these color metaphors for love concepts is lacking. This study investigated the red-gray color metaphor for lov…

  • Masked Translation Priming Effects for Chinese-English-Japanese Triple Cognates in Lexical Decision Tasks

  • Masked orthographic neighbor priming effects in Chinese two-character words

Open Access•Huilan Yang, Giacomo Spinelli et al.•ARTICLE•Language and Cognition•2023

In masked priming lexical decision tasks in alphabetic or syllabic script languages, latencies are longer when a word target is primed by a higher frequency neighbor (e.g., blue–BLUR) than when primed by an unrelated word of equivalent frequency (e.g., care–BLUR) – an “inhibitory neighbor priming effect.” In contrast, Zhou et al. (1999) demonstrated facilitatory orthographic neighbor priming for two-character Chinese words (e.g., 华丽–华贵). However,…

  • Conceptual metaphor activation in Chinese–English bilinguals

Open Access•Huilan Yang, J Reid et al.•ARTICLE•Bilingualism Language and Cognition•2023

An episodic memory experiment was conducted to examine whether “conceptual metaphors” influence how metaphorical expressions are processed and encoded into memory. Forty Chinese–English bilinguals read lists of expressions in their L1 and L2. The data revealed that after reading a series of metaphorical expressions based on the same underlying conceptual metaphor, participants falsely recognized new sentences that instantiated the same conceptual…

  • The Embodiment of Power as Forward/Backward Movement in Chinese and English Speakers

Huilan Yang, J Reid et al.•ARTICLE•Metaphor and Symbol•2021

In two experiments, we examined whether POWER is embodied in terms of horizontal forward and backward movement using an action compatibility task. Participants were asked to categorize power-related words (e.g., “boss”, “intern”) aseither “powerful” or “powerless” as quickly and accurately as possible. In the compatible condition, the response to indicate that the word was “powerful” involved a forward movement and the response to indicate “power…

  • The Fidelity—Adaptation Relationship in Non-Evidence-Based Programs and its Implication for Program Evaluation

Open Access•Jianping Shen, Huilan Yang et al.•ARTICLE•Evaluation•2008•References: 3

Based on our experience in helping design, implement, and evaluate a non-evidence-based program, we explore a non-conventional fidelity and adaptation relationship and its implications for program evaluation. We find that in non-evidence-based interventions, program fidelity and adaptation may not be competitors but serve to complement each other. This non-conventional relationship leads to expanded roles of evaluation in program design and impleme…

  • Putting the system back into systems change

    Open Access•Pennie G Foster‐fishman, Pennie G Foster-Fishman et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Community…•2007•Cited by: 62•References: 34

Systems change has emerged as a dominant frame through which local, state, and national funders and practitioners across a wide array of fields approach their work. In most of these efforts, change agents and scholars strive to shift human services and community systems to create better and more just outcomes and improve the status quo. Despite this, there is a dearth of frameworks that scholars, practitioners, and funders can draw upon to aid th…

  • When Is an External Evaluator No Longer External? Reflections on Some Ethical Issues

  • Multilevel Evaluation Alignment

Open Access•Huilan Yang, Jianping Shen et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Evaluation•2004•Cited by: 1

Using the evaluation work on the W.K. Kellogg Foundation’s Unleashing Resources Initiative as an example, in this article we explicate a general four-step model appropriate for multilevel evaluation alignment. We review the relevant literature, argue for the need for evaluation alignment in a multilevel context, explain the four-step model, discuss the benefits of the model, and address the issues that one should pay attention to when implementin…

  • Reintegration Services and the Likelihood of Adult Imprisonment

Open Access•Joseph P Ryan, Randy K Davis et al.•ARTICLE•Research on Social Work Practice•2001•Cited by: 5

Objective: This study used longitudinal data to identify the factors associated with adult imprisonment for adjudicated delinquent males following long-term residential care. Method: Logistic regression and survival models were developed to examine the effectiveness of reintegrational services. The sample included 397 adjudicated delinquents released between 1992 and 1993 from a residential treatment facility in Michigan. The Michigan Department …
