What do pseudowords tell us about word processing? An overview
This article provides an overview of the use of pseudowords—letter strings that resemble real words by adhering to phonotactic and orthotactic rules (e. g., fambo follows the rules of English phonology and orthography, but it does not have an actual meaning)—in written word processing research, with a focus on readers in alphabetic languages. We review how pseudowords have been used in research to isolate specific features of words to examine the…
A Spanish Sentence Repetition Task and its relationship with spontaneous language in children aged 30 to 36 months
Sentence Repetition Tasks (SRTs) have been convincingly established as a reliable tool for assessing child language development. However, there are important aspects of this task that deserve more attention. For example, few studies have explored their potential role for identifying language disorders in children under 4 years of age, as almost all evidence refers to children above this age. There is also scarce evidence regarding the relationshi…
How flexible is the orthographic processing of flankers? Effects for letter order and letter identification
This study explored the flexibility of the orthographic processing at parafoveal level by manipulating the relationship between flankers and targets in two lexical decision tasks. In the first, we presented the following flankers: (1) the same words as targets (farola farola farola); (2) targets with transposed non-adjacent letters (falora farola falora); (3) the targets with one different letter (fapola farola fapola); and (4) unrelated pseudowo…
Morphological processing of complex and simple pseudo-words in adults and older adults
The role of morphemes in lexical recognition has been extensively explored in recent years, although the evidence from older adults is extremely scarce. In this study, we carry out a lexical decision task to assess the interference generated by morphological composition of pseudo-words (i.e., the longer and more error prone decisions on pseudo-words made up of morphemes in comparison to pseudo-words without morphological appearance) in a group of…
Perceptual salience of derivational suffixes in visual word recognition
This study analyzes the role of derivational suffixes in visual word recognition, tracking the eye movements of 31 participants in a sentence‐reading task in Spanish. Perceptual salience of suffixes was operationalized as the proportion of letters represented by the suffixes with respect to the full words, that is, we relate the number of letters comprising the suffixes to the number of letters in the words in which they appear. The results revea…
Effects of grammatical category and morphology on fast mapping in typically developing and late talking toddlers
The purpose of this study was to examine early fast mapping abilities in late talkers (LT) and typically developing (TD) Spanish-speaking children by considering the effect of different variables on fast mapping (age, vocabulary level, grammatical category and number morphology). Thirty-eight Spanish-speaking children were assessed at three times (21 to 24 months at the beginning of the study). A group of LT was matched in age with a TD control g…
