  • The Nineteenth-Century Sonnet

    Open Access•Joseph G Phelan, Joseph Phelan•BOOK•Nineteenth-Century Sonnet•2005

What was the appeal of 'the Sonnet's scanty plot of ground' to Romantic and Victorian poets? How did a form which had fallen into disuse in the early eighteenth-century become a central and enduring p

  • Performance on Multi-Dimensional Concept-Identification Tasks

    Open Access•Will J Friedman, Barry M Stelling et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1977

Behavior described by hypothesis theory was investigated using multi-dimensional concept-identification tasks. 25 undergraduate students were given 8 experimental problems (4 nonverbal and 4 verbal) after a brief training. The two sets of problems, each with 1, 2, 3, and 4 dimensions (each with a singular value) in common with a sample card, were counterbalanced and randomly given. No significant differences for nonverbal and verbal stimuli were …

  • Effects on Productivity and Morale of a Systems-Designed Job-Enrichment Program in Pacific Telephone

    Open Access•Robert C Gallegos, Joseph G Phelan•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1977

In two experiments over a 14-mo. period, 56 maintenance mechanics (framemen) served as experimental ( N = 21) and control ( N = 35) groups. Framemen carried work responsibilities on large “frames“—serving the larger business communities. Quantity aspect of the work consisted of 24-hr., day-to-day connection of wires to complete new, re-arranged, or disconnected circuits. The quality aspect could be measured by number of customer complaints which …

  • Discrimination of Dialect from Temporal Patterns of the Speech Signal

    Open Access•Claudia R Wright, Michael T Motley et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1976

To determine whether dialect discrimination could be made on the basis of temporal sequencing (or rhythm) of the speech signal, speech samples were collected from 90 Ss, identified as black, white, and Mexican-American. Samples were matched on basis of similarity of context. Similar samples were recorded, using a triad test format. Two racially similar and one different speaker, e.g., black, black and white, formed a triad. 24 ads were put togeth…

  • Beliefs in Internal-External Control of Reinforcement among Blacks in Integrated and Segregated High Schools

    Open Access•Hardie F Harris, Joseph G Phelan•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1973

2 groups of 28 and 27 16- to 18-yr.-old Black high school students in Southern California, matched for age, socio-economic status, scholastic aptitude and years in a particular high school, were given the Rotter I-E Scale. Blacks in an integrated school were significantly more externally controlled than Blacks in a segregated school. Blacks in an integrated school may feel they have no power or authority to define themselves. Upgrading of schools…

  • Role of Stimulus Generalization in the Treatment of Alcoholism

    Open Access•Danny J Cohen, Joseph G Phelan•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1971

7 avoidance and 6 escape Ss were conditioned to an alcoholic beverage and administered the Rotter internal vs external locus of control of reinforcement test. 23 Ss, all patients at the Sepulveda V.A. Hospital, were tested for generalized conditioned anxiety in reaction to other alcoholic beverages after acquisition and extinction procedures. Results (χ 3 ) showed significant generalization for all experimental Ss combined in extinction who exter…

  • Expectancies of Unemployable Males regarding Source of Control of Reinforcement

    Open Access•James D Scott, Joseph G Phelan•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1969

Three groups of 60 22- to 28-yr.-old males, matched for age, socio-economic status and scholastic aptitude and classified as hard core unemployables were tested on the Rotter I-E Scale. No significant differences in alienation scores were noted between Group A whites and white college students. Group B Black Ss were significantly more externally controlled with greater variability of scores. Group C Mexican-Americans showed an even greater tenden…

  • Inhibiting Effects of Attempts to Verbalize on Attainment and Use of Complex Conjunctive Concepts

    Open Access•Joseph G Phelan•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1968

For 90 college students, matched for SAT scores, there was differentiation of ability to identify correctly complex conjunctive concepts in a card-sorting task, as demonstrated by ability to learn the concepts to an errorless trial and to apply the newly formed concepts to other materials. Some Ss were able to learn the concepts to an errorless trial and to apply each concept to new sorts but were then unable to verbalize correctly those rules th…

  • Transfer of Verbal Conditioning to Non-Verbal Behavior

    Open Access•Joseph G Phelan, Hamid Hekmat et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1967

In this study neutral syllables pre-rated on Osgood's semantic differential scale were presented as names of blocks. After negative meaning was associated with the syllable XEH Ss re-rated the syllables on three descriptive scales. This conditioning of meaning was established by using unpleasant, weak, and mixed weak-unpleasant evaluative words. These affects were shown to be conditionable to the syllable XEH, to be transferable to a wooden block…

  • Paranoia and Masochism

    Open Access•Joseph G Phelan•ARTICLE•International Journal of Social…•1966

THEODORE REIK(18) in Masochism and the Modern Man presented a newview of social masochism. Jule Nydes(13) complementing Reik’s conception, has explored some of the dynamics governing the relationship of the paranoid and the masochistic character structure. The discussion needs to be carried one step further. When the individual rapidly drops the paranoid stance and retreats to the masochistic, he is abandoning a manoeuvre upon which much of his p…

  • Use of Matching Method in Measuring Reliability of Individual Clinician's Diagnostic Judgment

    Open Access•Joseph G Phelan•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1965

This study aimed at exploring reliability differences in clinical diagnostic judgments. Twenty clinical psychologists volunteered for an examination of the consistency of their judgmental performance in matching test results and projective protocols against autobiographies. Psychologist-judges matched, at a better than chance level, Rorschach, TAT, and Sentence Completion Test protocols and objective, paper-and-pencil test data for 6 Ss against t…
