A Pilot Faculty Fellows Pipeline Program
BACKGROUND: Several regions across the United States, especially in the Southeast, are facing a critical nurse and nurse-faculty shortage. METHOD: The College of Nursing at the University of South Carolina (USC) created the Nurse Faculty Fellow Pipeline Program (NFFPP) to increase the nursing faculty workforce. Additional faculty are needed to educate nurses to meet the state's needs. RESULTS: This pilot program provides a 1- to 2-year fellowship…
Tipping Point
BACKGROUND: State health rankings, national nursing education reform, and increasing awareness of social injustices propelled a college of nursing to transform its strategic plan, infrastructure, and curriculum. The prevalence of social determinants of health (SDOH) in South Carolina indicates a need for the state's health workforce to understand the impact of SDOH and recognize strategies to address and ameliorate SDOH. With the paradigmatic int…
Chronic Disease Self-Management and Behavior Change Attitudes in Older Adults
The population of older adults with chronic disease is increasing, yet little is known about their perception of chronic disease and self-management. To develop successful and sustainable chronic disease self-management interventions in the older adult population, health care providers must first understand older adults’ attitudes toward health status and behavior change. This pilot study was conducted to determine the feasibility of the study de…
The Association of Individual and Neighborhood Social Cohesion, Stressors, and Crime on Smoking Status Among African-American Women in Southeastern US Subsidized Housing Neighborhoods
The purpose of this study was to examine the associations between individual and neighborhood social contextual factors and smoking prevalence among African-American women in subsidized neighborhoods. We randomly sampled 663 adult women in 17 subsidized neighborhoods in two Southeastern US states. The smoking prevalence among participants was 37.6%, with an estimated neighborhood household prevalence ranging from 30 to 68%. Smokers were more like…
Assessment of Oral Health Needs and Barriers to Care in a Gullah Community
The design of a multilevel, culturally and locally relevant intervention may lead to a decrease in OH disparities in Gullah communities
Application of a CBPR Framework to Inform a Multi‐level Tobacco Cessation Intervention in Public Housing Neighborhoods
African American women in urban, high poverty neighborhoods have high rates of smoking, difficulties with quitting, and disproportionate tobacco‐related health disparities. Prior research utilizing conventional “outsider driven” interventions targeted to individuals has failed to show effective cessation outcomes. This paper describes the application of a community‐based participatory research (CBPR) framework to inform a culturally situated, eco…
Development and Evaluation of a Toolkit to Assess Partnership Readiness for Community-Based Participatory Research
An earlier investigation by academic and community co-investigators led to the development of the Partnership Readiness for Community-Based Participatory Research (CBPR) Model, which defined major dimensions and key indicators of partnership readiness. As a next step in this process, we used qualitative methods, cognitive pretesting, and expert reviews to develop a working guide, or toolkit, based on the model for academic and community partners …
Race, Ethnicity, and Geography
Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the leading cause of death in women. Misconceptions about the importance of CVD still persist. These myths affect awareness of CVD and the urgency with which women present for treatment after symptoms develop. Modifiable and nonmodifiable risk factors are more prevalent among ethnic minority women in concentrated geographical locations. The recent publication of the CDC women’s atlas presents a unique opportunity f…
