  • Some effects of positive life events on community mental health

    Open Access•Alex Zautra, Lynn Stanley Simons•ARTICLE•American Journal of Community…•1979•Cited by: 14•References: 14

Measures of positive and negative events were derived from a life-event inventory to test the predictions of an equilibrium model and a positive mental health model of psychological well-being. These measures were related to indicators of individual and community well-being with data obtained through a household survey of 454 residents. Residents who reported more negative events also reported more psychological distress and less positive adjustm…

  • An assessment of a community's mental health needs

    Open Access•Alex Zautra, Lynn Stanley Simons•ARTICLE•American Journal of Community…•1978•Cited by: 8•References: 4

This study tested the potential utility of social indicators and survey data in the prediction of community mental health sevice utilization and construction of a model of community need. The results showed that both kinds of data are strongly associated with rates of usage across census tracts within the community. The social indicator data appeared to describe the social forces acting with various segments of the community. The strength of thes…

  • The stimulating and inhibiting effects of weapons on Aggressive behavior

    Open Access•C W Turner, Lynn Stanley Simons et al.•ARTICLE•Aggressive Behavior•1977•References: 24

Evidence is presented suggesting that firearms violence is an important social problem. Research strongly suggests that the effectiveness of firearms as a cause of death and injury may be due to their widespread availability, their lethality, and the impulsivity of their use. The investigation of a possible causal link between firearms and impulsive aggression led to Berkowitz and LePage's (1967) weapons effect experiment. The results suggested t…

  • Evaluation apprehension, hypothesis awareness, and the weapons effect

    Open Access•Lynn Stanley Simons, C W Turner•ARTICLE•Aggressive Behavior•1976•References: 14

The present study was designed to extend Turner and Simons' (1974) investigation of possible experimental artifacts in aggression research. Employing a 2 × 2 × 2 factorial design, 60 male subjects were given either a low or high evaluation apprehension treatment, and then were either exposed or not exposed to weapons in an otherwise close replication of the seven shock-unassociated weapons condition of Berkowitz and LePage (1967). Based on an obj…
