  • Assessing alcohol industry penetration and government safeguards

Open Access•June Leung, Sally Casswell et al.•ARTICLE•BMJ Global Health•2024

BACKGROUND: The alcohol industry uses many of the tobacco industry's strategies to influence policy-making, yet unlike the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control, there is no intergovernmental guidance on protecting policies from alcohol industry influence. Systematic assessment of alcohol industry penetration and government safeguards is also lacking. Here, we aimed to identify the nature and extent of industry penetration in a cross-section of…

  • Better than Doing Nothing’ – constructing support for biodiversity offsetting in Finland

    Open Access•Thomas Karlsson, Kamilla Karhunmaa•ARTICLE•Critical Policy Studies•2023•Cited by: 1•References: 17

Despite widely covered controversies, biodiversity offsetting continues to be introduced in novel places as a solution to counter biodiversity loss. As previous studies have focused on contestation around offsetting, there is a lack of studies analyzing how actors generate consensus while constructing biodiversity offsetting policies. To assess this, we analyze the early phases of policy construction in Finland, a country that until recently did …

  • The Road to the Alcohol Act 2018 in Finland

Open Access•Thomas Karlsson, Petra Mäkelä et al.•ARTICLE•Health Policy•2020

Finnish alcohol policy has aimed for decades years to mitigate alcohol-related harm by using high taxation and restrictions on the physical availability of alcohol. The state monopoly on the retail of alcohol has played a central role in reducing the availability of alcohol. In 2011, preparations began for a comprehensive reform of the Alcohol Act 1994. Over time, the issue became highly politicised, lobbied and divisive. It took intense work of …

  • Trends in Alcohol Consumption and Violence in the Nordic Countries 1960–2000

    Open Access•Esa Österberg, Thomas Karlsson•ARTICLE•Contemporary Drug Problems•2011•References: 12

Patterns of drinking, especially drinking to intoxication, play an important role in violent offenses, and there are studies that indicate a causal relationship between alcohol consumption and violence. The strength of this relationship is, however, culturally dependent, and the amount of alcohol drunk and patterns of drinking are not the only factors affecting violence rates. This article examines if increases in alcohol consumption in the Nordi…

  • Kabbalah in Sweden

This article examines the history of Kabbalah in Sweden. The reader is presented with an overall view to Kabbalah in Sweden: first, the Johannes Bureus and the Nordic Kabbalah, Kabbalah after Bureus, Kabbalistic literature, and last, Kabbalah in Sweden today. When the Kabbalah reached Sweden it was mainly the non-Jewish Kabbalah that gained influence, even if its Jewish roots were acknowledged. Johannes Bureus unites, in a similar fashion as do t…

  • Moral Regulation of Public Space and Drinking in the Media and Legislation in Finland

    Open Access•Jukka Törrönen, Thomas Karlsson•ARTICLE•Contemporary Drug Problems•2005•References: 5

At the beginning of 1995, well-mannered public drinking was permitted in Finland. Contrary to expectations, this liberalization did not result in the civilizing of drinking habits. It brought public boozing, public urination, and street violence. In the article we examine to what extent public drinking has been perceived as a threat to public order in the media and in the parliamentary debate on the Act on Public Order (612/2003). The regulation …

  • A Tax Paradise in the Making? Alcohol Regulations in the Åland Islands

    Open Access•Thomas Karlsson•ARTICLE•Contemporary Drug Problems•1999

When the European Union decided to end tax-free sales within the EU, it was considered such a serious threat to the welfare of the Åland Islands that its continuation was set as a precondition for a membership in the EU. To enable the continuation of tax-free sales a tax border was set, allowing tax-free sales on boat and air traffic between Åland and continental Finland. Tax-free alcohol has also to a large extent influenced the drinking habits …
